4runner supercharger facts : TRD past and present never offered a 4.0 supercharger for the 4runner.
TRD PTR29-35093 FJ Cruiser Fit Kit, 2007-2009 was the kit for the 4.0. (No 4Runner)
Toyota introduced the Roller Rocker V-6 in fall of 2009 , Instant Rumor Toyota is working on a supercharger for the new V-6.
All rumors from big wigs suggest at summer of 2013 release.
Toyota worked on the Supercharger for the new V-6 approximately 4 years and decided not to release for Durability improvements .
New Rumor is will have a perfected model for release 01/2014
So, Toyota could not make a working supercharger they were satisfied with in 4 years, now they can start over and do it in 9 months ?
If Toyota ever does make a supercharger for the rocker 4.0 it will be FJ only just like now.

TRD Manager goes to marketing and says.I want to make a supercharger kit for the 4.0 but only for the least popular vehicle that uses it, Yes I know the 4runner has the same engine and it would cost next to nothing and we sell 4 times as many but no we don’t see a market there. Fast forward 4 years later.Ok boss we have to start over, but I feel we have it licked and by 2014 (near the end of FJ Production) It will be ready to sell. At which point sales for a FJ supercharger and FJ in general will be low. Most big ticket items like this are purchased when vehicle is 1-3 years old at most for a variety of reasons.Example : Some people want to roll it into financing. As for selling to a used FJ crowd Who wants to add a supercharger to a powetrain with 100K miles. Toyota Fail on this one.

The reason toyota never offered the S/C for the 4th gen V6, was because they offered the s/c for the 4th gen V8!!!
Now, if you search, there are quite a few people that have used the tacoma v6 s/c kit on the 4runner, with a piggyback or standalone computer. It bolts up, there is just no tune for it.
I'm confused about the supercharger... if the 4Runner has the same powertrain as the FJCruiser, and the supercharger physically bolts up to our engine then why would a different tune be needed for the same engine?
I had heard that one of the reasons supercharging our current engine would be hard is due to thinner cylinder walls and questions about long term durability with boost. However if they have released a kit for the FJCruiser and it uses the same engine then that doesn't make much sense.
One would think the kit should swap right over, and if it's already around why not make it available to the 4Runner where it would sell very well? Afraid of cannibalizing Lexus GX460 sales?

Clearly there is nothing 'official' here so this can be taken with a grain of salt, but to add the little I've heard...
I know someone who works at Magnuson Superchargers. They build aftermarket s/c kits, in addition they design and develop s/cs for OEMs such as Toyota. They are one of a couple companies Toyota uses. They were given a brand new SR5 in 2010 with the expectation to develop a s/c for it... but the green-light has still yet to be given. My friend said Toyota normally has a few designs done at the same time, then they choose the one they like the best and take it further into in-house testing. Thus far the new 4Runner and development sits idle... perhaps other design houses have been given the green light, perhaps not.
I'm not holding my breath though.

The FJ supercharger only fits the old 1GR motor, the 05-13 tacoma's and the 0?-08 FJ's. 09+ FJ and 10+ taco uses a dual VVTi 1GR which does NOT share the same bolt patterns. There is no S/C for this engine YET.

*Sigh* Is this really true? I've been looking forward to getting the SC this summer, and had been putting off getting other upgrades (new tires, etc). Quite depressing. :/
FWIW, my dad has a Tundra with a TRD SuperCharger... and hasn't had any trouble with it. That truck is pretty scary.

I still don't understand the urge for a super charger in the 5th gen.... maybe for you daily commuters that would make sense, maybe. But for me personally this truck has ample power, it's just taken some training and understanding and most importantly getting used to. I guess also I have never driven a V8 for a long period of time so it might be less of an urge and comparison for me as I don't really know what I'm missing.
I would like to also state that I wouldn't need any other excuse to consume more fuel. The way prices are going.... yeaaasssh! I tell you as soon as gas hits $6.00+ a gallon, which it will, my 4runner is for sale as that takes the pure fun and joy out of it. Reality kicked in for me during my Aspen trip where fuel is almost $5.00 a gallon. No thank you.... I know its a one off because of its location and cliental, but still, holy empty walletness!

Agree for the most part. I too am fascinated and waiting for the supercharger but do I need it, probably not. I also have a moderately massaged v8 camaro and do enjoy the kick in the pants feeling when you stomp on it but when you really get down to it, I think my 4Runner would actually blow it away after the first 1/8 mile. Still waiting to see how much $$$ they'll want for it and then I can make a decision.

So what happens then? You just give up SUVs all together because gas will cost you an extra $200-300 a year? You look like a guy that really uses his truck, I'm surprised you would do that. I could see buying a cheap commuter as a DD, but why completely give up all that capability ?

99% of US have no means or method for installing a $5,000 anything on our rigs. However, it would be neat to see and discuss the results of those 1% that might share the story of installing a supercharger. (Heck I don't have anywhere near the skill set that some on here have).
Personally, my DD is a 2013 Chevy 3500 crew cab longbed that could one day be my main tow vehicle on long mountainous vacations.
The wife has a yaris for her DD that cost far more than any fuel $avings. Insurance alone for a subcompact cost more than any savings.
We love the 4runner and it is sufficient for our current needs. It would be interesting to consider a future Runner with direct injection and forced air :tea: versus the 10 mpg mule I'm currently driving (the Chevy).
