2010+ TRD Supercharger

SO I will revive our hope here... I know we have a couple of toyota techs on the board that can confirm.

I am not scared of a frankenstein motor or swapping of components as I have done it many times on toyotas and have learned that toyota cross utilizes many components in order to keep design cost and sku's down and profits up.

HAs anyone thought about swapping our heads for a tacoma 1GRFE head? If we swap heads ( not expensive from a junkyard) put a fresh head gasket on and use a 1st gen TRD supercharger..

Yes this does not solve tune which can be done a number of ways with either some sort of piggyback or even a standalone. I bet we can even swap harness and use a tacoma ECU with Toyota Tune. but what this does solve is the physical components bolting up to the motor with no need to re-invent the wheel. just will make the install a little bit more involved..

Can anyone confirm that bolt pattern of the 2 heads match?

Pretty sure The FJ supercharge will bolt to your motor, you don't need to swap heads, it's the tune, timing and such that leaves us without.

Thank you [MENTION=64685]TOY2G[/MENTION] ! Not that I doubt you but can anyone confirm that the 2 intake manifolds share the same bolt pattern - confirming that the fj Supercharger bolts up....

If thats the case I am surprised it has not been done already! We can swap harness and ECU from a tacoma/FJ and call it a day! The key/ immobilizer will need to get programmed and potentially a jumper harness to integrate the Tacoma harness with the fuse box and body harness

AEM can control dual vvti same way it can control the vvti on the Aristo 2JZ and the same way it can control mivec on the evoX and vanos on any BMW. Any "qualified" tuner can tune this with a standalone. If you decide to maintain the dual vvti. the dual vvti is a hydrolic system that adjust timing for better mpg. this can be disabled to work in a static mode like the tacoma operates. Lets be real if your supercharging then mpg's are not your priority and therfore you can do without anyway.

VVTI is much more than MPG. It is very much related to power. A static mode would be leaving a ton of power and drivability on the table.

Kinda what I was thinking, too. Two different cam "profiles" (if you will - I know it's only 1 actual cam profile, but hydraulically modified) for low RPM and high RPM - both optimized for most efficiency (a-la most power) at the given RPM...

Leaving the High RPM VVTi profile engaged will very likely result in a drop in low-end power and MPG/Efficiency everything else equal. Of course a SC would counter that loss in HP (but not efficiency ;) ), but would end up having more power and be more efficient with the low RPM VVTi profile still intact IMO...

Kudos to anyone that gets this going - I'll take a pass and enjoy a reliable but slightly under-powered motor :)

Felpro Lists the 2010+ FJ head gaskets as 26563PT & 26564PT (L&R)
And the 2010+ T4R as the exact same part number.

So as far as hardware, the 2010+ FJC supercharger PTR29-35090 will bolt to your engine most likely.

However, suggesting swapping the harness from the FJC to the T4R as if it is a simple thing leads me to believe you may not have much experience with suck things. The FJ shares very little with the 4Runner as it pertains to wiring. 4Runner internal wiring is per vehicle equipment as is the FJ. So you would need a hodgepodge of your old harness and a FJ harness and a multitude of other components to even consider such a swap.

If you really have to have a supercharger, just contact gadget and get the 2010 4Runner supercharger from URD. I have personally seen it and talked to gadget, the only thing he is lacking is the correct plugs to the factory ECM to make his supercharger a full kit. I'm sure you could work I something out with him vs spending 10-15k making an FJ one fit. (FWIW) I 99% sure the TRD and URD superchargers we got to see at Summit are both the PTR29-35090 dialed down a PSI or two.

The felpro head gasket tells me that the deck and headstuds share the same pattern. We know the head casting is different to accomodate the dual vvti. I hope that the intake ports did not change so that is why I focused on the intake manifold gasket.

I appreciate you trying to talk me off the ledge. Eventhough I am not an automotive electrician, or am sitting infront of the toyota wiring diagram for either vehicle, I can with confidence say that even though the electrical components may seam different at first glance, toyota does a great job of cross utilizing as many of the components as possible to save on cost. Lets not forget these are production vehicles. I came out of an FJ where I quickly learned that the FJ came wired for all options even though it was a basemodel unit that did not have the options. I also agree that the body harness is specific to the vehicle but the engine harness is specific to the motor and not the body. An engine harness can be swapped in a couple of hours and integrated to work with the body fairly easily as they work independantly of each other with the exception of the tachometer, and drive-by-wire where applicable. All else can operate independantly of each other.

BTW- this would not be the first time that I have used a motor harness from another vehicle.

My step father has a 2005 Tacoma and I will try his intake manifold on my 4R in the coming weeks, if the intakes are interchangable I can have the 4R SCed for 5-6K... Will keep you guys posted as this is not an immdiate priority with other automove projets taking priority at this time. I think I can get to this by 3rd quarter of this year.

I would talk to Gadget at URD. These questions have come up before and he will have an answer for you.

Just want to clarify, URD does NOT have a supercharger for our application. Gadget has a prototype running on a 2010 with no plans to produce it. We went back and forth on email last month and the end point was that he needs at least 10 people to buy the kit at a price much higher, (approaching 50%), than the other kits in order to even get the ball rolling without engine management.

Right now your option is to go custom turbo and standalone ECU. Unichip has a plug n play for our application but Gadget heard mixed things about them. Your options are AEM, proEFI for a hard wired tuning solution.

How does 505 HP and 550 lb-ft of torque sound? Who wants to be the Guinea pig?

They seem to hold up in the Sequoia & Tundra (though I'd rather a LC200 Transfer case myself) with no issues at the moment for those who use the TRD Supercharger. Damn thing sounds just insanely mean in real life by the way...

TRD fit the 3UR-FE with supercharger in a Tacoma back in like 2009? According to them it didn't take much modification of the body. I have the measurements of the frame widths and such between a J120/J150 & a Tundra and its a tight fit... but it fits.

It's been sort of a dream swap for me ever since I figured out it'd physically fit without a lot of serious modification to the frame rails.
