2011 4Runner ACCESSORIES Question

I got a 2011 4Runner SR5 4x4. It did not come with 3 accessories, and I was hoping someone could help answer these questions before I order them.

OK:

# 1:

Carpeted Cargo Mat.
I have a 3rd Row. HOWEVER, I never want to use the third row. He gave me a good deal on a 4Runner with the 3rd row because it's all he had on the lot. If I order the carpeted cargo mat "WITHOUT THIRD ROW 2010-2011 4RUNNERS, will it work? Will it fit pretty flush? I figure that on the rare occasion I wanted to use the third row, I could simply remove the mat in advance.

Running Boards.
If I wanted to add running boards, is this something I could easily install properly at home? I do NOT have a way to lift my car, but am otherwise equipped with all the tools I should need. Is this something I am better off having the dealer install? I should have negotiated this in, but forgot.

# 3:

Rear cargo cover.
In my old 4Runner, I had this rolling cargo cover/shade thing that I could use to cover cargo area. My 2011 4Runner didn't come with this. Is it easy to add myself?

I have a set of OEM running boards that I took off of my 2011 SR5. I would be willing to let them go way below what the dealer gets for them. If you are close to NC I would be more than happy to put them on for you in my shop. They are very easy to put on, just take out the bolts that hold the rockers down, put the brackets up, reinstall the bolts, and hand the boards. You don't have to lift it at all.

# 1 yes the cargo mat will fit nice in the back. I too have a 3rd seat cause I got a good deal and the mat I have fits great.

# 2 Running boards are a piece of cake to install .. In fact I removed mine. Not sure if I will put them back on after I get a lift or sell them. The dealer will charge u big $$$$ to have them installed.

# 3 Very easy to install. I had one on my FJ takes less than a mintute to do.

I ordered from dealer parts department. I think it was $150.00.

1. I don't know much about the size differences since I don't have a third row.

2. Installing the running boards (at least the Toyota South East boards) should be pretty easy. There are two bolts on three brackets that go into the underside. If you don't have the means of lifting the vehicle it should still be doable but I would recommend you atleast have a 6" extension for your ratchet.

3. The cargo cover is available and very easy to install, but based on other posts here, is not very popular. It leaves a large area between the seat backs and the cover open.

I went to Auto Elegance. They sell ATS custom running boards and I really like them. I like Auto anything for other accessories

I had asked for recommendations for accessories on another thread but did not get any. However, I did a Google search and compared prices from different dealers selling OEM accessories for the T4R. I ended buying the back carpeted cargo mat from them. There were three choices and as I don't have the 3rd row, I chose the following:
Item: Cargo/Trunk Mats, Black, w/o 3rd row
Price: $73.71

They also had the cargo cover for less than $100, can't remember the exact price. In case anyone is interested, the website is

I have third row that came with the premium carpet mat set which included the rear mat. When the seats are down it fits perfectly. If I want to put the third row seats up, I just kind of roll it up behind the third row, or just take it out if I need more storage.

Not sure what it all means but this is what the label on the mat says.
Mine is black (charcoal) if that matters.

I don't have a 3rd row model, but there is a 3rd row specific mat if I recall correctly. It has holes for the 3rd row release handles. I'm 99% certain I saw this on the 3rd row SR5 at the dealer and I'm not thinking of the Highlander.

Refer to my thread asking question about running boards- the advice that I got from folks was that if you wanted something functional- that is to step on to get into the truck, I should not install the factory OEM running boards as they do not have enough space on them to step on. I started looking for other options and settled on STEELCRAFT black nerf bars.

Running boards and factory cross bars needed

Why is everyone removing their running boards?
I want to put them on for 2 reasons.
1 To protect the sides of the car. I figure that if someone opens their car door in the parking lot, it will hit the running board before it hits my door.
2 To aid in entering the car.

Please let me know if I should be rethinking adding the running boards!

I think you might be disappointed if you install the so called OEM running boards for the reasons you state. I sold mine months ago. I found that the way they are designed, they had very little usefulness in entering or leaving the vehicle because they were located too far under the vehicle. Unless you are willing to manufacture different brackets, the location of the boards could not be adjusted outward so one could get a good foot hold.

As to protecting the vehicle from door dings, possibly. Is your rig lifted? If not, I do not think the boards will protect from most door's due to both the height of a stock 5G and the fact the running boards are tucked so far under the vehicle. I am sure some doors would find the running board before the side of your vehicle, but I would not depend on the boards only. Get some good side molding too.

The boards will help protect the bottom side of the vehicle from rock chips, if that is a concern for you.

Now, if you get aftermarket boards...........all your concerns may be addressed.

At first, I liked having my running boards. (They were OEM). Although they were not really functional, I kinda like the looks. The only distraction was the chrome strip on the side of the boards. That strip, along with the chrome along the lower side of the vehicle was just a bit too much. I took the boards off in order to cover the chrome, then I took another look at my vehicle without any boards and liked the looks better......now you know the rest of the story.....

I had the OEM boards and found them completely non-functional. I need them, as I have a young family that uses them as well as me.

I removed them and bought the Dee Zee boards. Not only do they look better, they are perfectly functional.
