2011 SR5 - Newbie questions

Halo all,

After driving Honda's for the past several years, I purchased today a 2011 SR5 4Runner (Black with Ivory interior/leather package, sunroof etc). I am taking the delivery tomorrow.

As I don't have much experience with 4Runners I wanted to ask for your advice on few questions:

1. How often do you change tranny fluid? (And where is the deepstick for tranny?)

2. How often do you change front and read differential fluid?

3. Any other fluids that should be changed regularly that I might not be aware of (obviously regular oil change and after few years brake and coolant)?

4. Any other maintenance issues I should be aware of?

5. And finally, (do try not to laugh as much as possible) but could someone explain to me the following regarding the different 4x4 modes (the little stick shift next to automatic shifter):
a) When I drive the care on regular, dry roads, is the 4x4 shifter in neutral or in 4x4 high or....?
b) It is my understanding that any shifting of 4x4 shifter can only be done when the car is at full stop and the "regular" transmission in neutral?
c) How fast can I go/drive with 4x4 HIGH engaged?
d) How fast can I go/drive with 4x4 LOW engaged?

Finally, do all new Toyotas receive the 24 months complimentary care (oil changes) and will dealer use synthetic?

Any other advice you can offer I would be really grateful.

Thank you.

1st, Congrats on the purchase.

2nd, :rtfm: when you actually take delivery of the 4R as it will answer probably 99% of the questions you asked in detail. Included is a detailed maintenance guide as well.

3rd, enjoy!

4) Keep the prop shafts lubricated.
5)
a) 2H
b) 4H can be done on the fly below 50mph, IIRC. It won't actually engage at speeds higher than that. Again, it is in the manual.

Congrats and ditto on the post above. I know they are required to do so, but I always get anxious when taking delivery of a new vehicle because I just want them to hand me the keys and the manual and let me go drive the darn thing. But, if your dealer is like most, they will spend a good amount of time explaining just about everything you asked when you take delivery. And, if the service department is open, they will probably walk you through there and introduce you to the service manager. If you have questions, ask right then and there. They know Toyota is going to send you a survey after you make the purchase and they want you to check the "excellent" box next to every survey question asked. So, not saying they won't always be nice and make time for you but, theoretically speaking, they will probably never be nicer and more helpful than the day you take delivery.

Be sure to post pix. I love a nice shiny black vehicle, no matter the make or model. But I don't make the time to keep them as clean as I used to and, as good as they look clean, black makes for a nasty looking ride when it's dirty.

Welcome and congrats...
Since you became an owner you can visit Toyota Owners - Official Toyota Owners Website and get access to the owners manual, service information and other info. This should answer most questions.
4d. 4L you shouldn't be going fast at all. 10 mph max.
You should be getting the 24 months comp care. The oil change intervals will be 10k with synthetic.
