woops, yea i dont want to have any trips for a week or so in the heat. i get enough of that during the summer here on the west coast.. in the valley we get 100+ during the summer months.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the type or quality of trails around the Ouray/Telluride area, here is a hint at what may await you. This is the infamous Black Bear Pass trail, which runs from Hwy. 550 across the pass, then drops about 2000 feet into Telluride down the most outrageous switchbacks I've ever seen. Look for the jagged line on the face of the mountain--that's the trail! The first of these pics are from late Winter, when the trail is under untold feet of snow. To the far right is the famous power station, with Bridal Veil Falls below it. If you choose this area, shoot for August/September (maybe early Oct.). The last pic is borrowed from someone who ran it in season--this is the incredible view you get looking down into Telluride! In the winter pics, you would be entering from the notch in the upper left side of the shot.

Anyone else want to chime in? I'm gonna defer to you guys as for the location and dates as I am no longer in possession of a Mighty 1st Gen. I really hope you guys will still let me join in on the trip though.

Mike's suggestion of his back yard is not that far off - he lives in Price, just up the hill from the San Raphael Swell and The Maze section of Canyonlands National Park. Lots of good wheeling in there, multiple day trips and such.

If we're going to be in the Swell/Maze area, we'll be camping on the side of trail.
If that's what everybody wants, I'll see if I can chain together a set of trails. These would be expedition-style runs, very scenic, VERY remote, some technical sections probably but nothing too crazy.

I figured its about time to bump this thread and start making some progress on times and places to wheel. I can pretty much get time off whenever so whatever is best for the group is cool. I'm also flexible on location within a days drive from Colorado. If everyone can post their times they can go on a trip ill start making a calendar so we can at least narrow down a time frame.

A really nice, fantastic loop which I did part of a few years ago...
Take the road that goes up to the maze from the Hite bridge, technically called NPS 633. This road is gnarly, it pushed a stock '92 Tacoma to its very limits (tho we made it just fine). Take that all the way up to Teapot Rock, where you can head up to the Flint Trail. The Golden Staircase is an option for the most tricked out vehicles, but there are normal 4WD roads for the rest of us. Then from the Flint Trail you can take the graded Hans Flat Rd, or you can head west from the south on the Hatch Canyon (NPS 730) road, out Poison Spring canyon which is supposed to be super gnarly but doable with a good vehicle.
That area is one of the most spectacular, remote places I have ever been. highly recommended. I might even make the trip out to Utah if that's where you guys are going! Though I might have to disappear into the Maze on foot for a couple of days... best backpacking I've ever done was down in there.

Yeah, that's a good route. The Poison Springs crossing over the Dirty Devil really depends on the time of year, though. Late summer/early fall and it should be low enough. That crossing is the only reason a stock vehicle couldn't complete Poison Springs Wash, though.
I think the Golden Staircase has been closed to vehicles and is just a hiking trail now, but I'd find out for sure if we were going to be in the area.

I'm going to officially suggest the Buena Vista area in Colorado. There are trails in the area to challenge rigs of all types. The scenery is majestic to say the least. I also recommend that we do this over Columbus Day weekend, October 10th thru the 15th. Weather should be gorgeous that time of year but maybe a bit chilly for some at night.
