Since it was a insured Chevy rental car and foreigners, I wanted to push it off the mountain as a sacrifice to the mountain Gods and take bets how many times it would roll before it hit the bottom. But noooo, Dave,Ben,Will and Brad hooked it to Ben's winch and pulled it back from the edge so a wrecker could come and get it.jk!
The front bumper was about torn off too with possible front suspension damage and they said the brakes didn't work so we didn't want to mess with it. We then took them to my house where Dave talked to the idiots at Alamo on the customer service hotline who said it was not their problem after being transferred around and on hold for an hour and for us to call the US Forest Service.
He had the GPS coordinates for them to come and get it and everything and even though it's called Hurricane Pass it was technically a county road. I ended up taking them all the way down to Montrose Airport to the Alamo counter where the manager was understanding and gave them another rental car.
Here's the e-mail I got from her a few days later....
Hallo Gary
Sorry for not writing earlier but we'd like to inform you that everything's alright.
Mr Price of MH Towing was called by Alamo and arrived around 5; he told us that the Forest Service, after receiving your call, had called him as well to let him know abt the car accident. Mr Price then called you back and left a msg on your cell phone, did you get it? He then checked on Google Maps to find the location of the car and after we gave him the car keys, the Alamo manager gave us another car.
We were able to leave Montrose at 6 pm; when we arrived in Ouray we stopped at your house but you had all left so we drove on to Durango.
Alamo told us that the towing will be for us to pay since the car was on a county road and we'll have to pay for the car damage as well since we were not supposed to drive on a gravel road even if we had a 4 wheel drive car; so why does Alamo rent 4 wheel drive cars if they cannot be used on gravel roads?
We want to thank you again for all the assistance you and your friends gave us, for taking us all the way to Montrose. We hope we'll be able to pay you back some day. Keep in touch.

Doesn't sound like it:
They should have got the loss damage waiver if they were planning to take that thing down trails.

They had the loss damage waiver, but it was null and void as soon as they took it off pavement. That policy, in and of itself, is retarded. Alamo's policy is that if it's on dirt, it isn't covered. There are TONS of dirt roads around that area. As an example, 95% of the roads in Ouray are dirt! As I was *****ing-out the useless Alamo rep on the phone, I posed the question of getting into an accident in town in Ouray on a dirt road, and he proclaimed that the accident would not be covered in any way shape or form.

I tried to get my wife to hang out the window to get pictures but she was nervous about just being on the trail!
FYI- This post and the previous one are from Imogene Pass starting in Telluride. The first picture on this post shows a better view off the drop off in the shelf road where we passed multiple people coming the other direction.

Thank you for all the video posts John, one of these days I will get to mine! I have a bunch of great pictures of you, shoot me your email.
The first one is not a great picture, but I think we had almost as much fun with the cameras as we did the wheeling.

And last but not least...
I only got these two poor shots of [MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] because I could hardly keep up! We did a run up Yankee Boy Basin together, my first real mountain off-road trek and it was awesome. Hopefully next year I won't be so hesitant with the skinny pedal! Thanks again Gary!

Seeing the new pictures brings back that incredible week as if it was just yesterday. The FJ SUmmit 2014 is July 16-20, 2014, in Ouray. Registration opens in March. If you enjoy non-stop steep narrow trails and incredible scenery you should check it out. It IS that much fun.
