Mystery solved (I think). After doing some on line research myself i found a single reference to this issue:
VEHICLE NON-START:Issue began/discovered mid-may 2013 (less than 2,000 miles). Has continued since that date on irregular basis. Initially believed would occur only after having been driven for period of time to "warm up" engine. Have since found will occur on initial start attempt of day as well. Vehicle now has less than 10,000 miles.
Problem appears to be only affecting 2013 Toyota 4Runners w/key-less ignitions. Per factory; problem has been found on only a "handful" of vehicles nationwide. They state it is caused by the steering wheel release system "freezing up." "Most of the time," once you turn the steering wheel, it releases the excess pressure and the vehicle will start. However, I have found this not only true. On multiple occasions I have had to wait a period of time before it then re-starts. Before learning of the turning-the-wheel "trick" I had vehicle towed to a dealership twice. They could not replicate the problem.
Once told of the "turn the wheel solution" I found this worked most of the time. Dealership claimed there is no other solution and again stated it only has happened on a minimal number of vehicles nationwide.
So i sent this note to the dealer and dropped it off yesterday. Sure enough the tech found he was able (and showed me) to replicate the "Steering Wheel" bind situation and the no start issue came into play. In certain situations if you turn off the vehicle and the steering wheel is under a certain amount of torque that doesnt allow it to set in a 'safe' position when the time comes to restart you may have issues. If that happens move the steering wheel a few times into a 'less torque' position and hopefully you will be ok (I will let you know next time this happens). Supposedly there is a start up sequence (truck in park, foot on brake, steering wheel position) and if any of those are off, it wont start.
