2013 SR5 4x4 Update

New toyo open country mts

At 86950 miles replaced the E rated MTs (about 55,000 miles on them). They had really gotten to be loud on the way to Vegas with only a bit less than 1/4 inch on them.

I kept the two best - had the tire dealer put one on the spare rim. Will feel a whole lot better with that than the p-metric that was there.

This is the fourth set that I have bought at Les Schwab in Fallon. 2 sets on the Land Rover, second set on the 4Runner.. This should be good until I get to about 150,000 miles.

Difference between old and new Toyo MT (E)

First with 55,000 miles, second with zero miles. New ones much quieter.

Trek 357-Doin' the Dunes

3/15/2018 - Just never tire of driving it in the dirt, taking pictures of it, and dragging the new rock sliders and TOYO M/Ts thru the sand.

Expecting a lot of snow this afternoon and tomorrow and Saturday.

This is in the dunes north of Hazen.

So far - - -

Trek #358 was my 95th documented trek in the 4Runner (#264 was the first).

Owned it 3 years, 3 months and 11 days (Since 10 Dec 2014)

Put nearly 60,000 miles on it (28,000 to 88,000)

Probably 10,000 to 15,000 in the dirt. (20%?)

Miles and time go fast when you're having fun......

Has been in CA, NV, OR, AZ, UT - - -

How’s your Nokian tires? Are they good?

Today -> Trimmed the Door Sills

I trimmed the sills under the doors today. Amounted to completely removing all off the mounting stuff at the bottom and then sawing off everything below the break where the vertical part drops down. Necessary because these sliders mount very high (Made for Trail Edition).

I will probably end up putting some sheet metal screws above the chrome strip (hidden by door bottoms.) to stiffen up the mounting.

MARKIE671:

1 - I do not have Nokian tires. Just started on my second set of Toyo Open Country M/Ts.

2 - Don't drink much coffee in Las Vegas, Don't get down there more than once every two years.

3. Haven't had the blue 2004 Discovery for more than 3 years (traded it in on the 4Runner in Reno)

Trek 359 - 25 Mar - Nezelda

Headed up to the Nezelda Mine. Didn't quite make it. It has been about 9 months since the big 100,000 acre fire. All of the brush is pretty much gone so the rain and snow storms have gullied the trails and slid a lot of big boulders down into the ravines where the trails are (were).

Since it was 31 degrees out with 20 mph winds, I didn't feel much like moving rocks and filling holes.

So I got to near the top of the ridge but not quite to the mines at the top.

Great day out though.

Well the trimmed door sills have done a good job of keeping mud from packing up under the the door edges.

TREK 360 - April 3 2018

180403 - Trek 360 - Coyote Canyon, East Lee Canyon, Wonder Mountain

Reid’s Dodge just wasn’t working this morning sowe took Jacob’s F-150 stretch cab 4x4 along with my 4Runner. The crew was Jacob, Sierra, Whitney, Reid and myself. The plan was to go up into Dixie Valley, take a left to Coyote Canyon, then double back and look for a “Jeep trail” to East Lee Canyon., Then head back west to Dixie valley Road, run back south and then head north-east up to Wonder Mountain.

Anyhow we got sort of a late start (about 10:30) and headed east from Fernley to Fallon. A brief stop to gas up the Ford and we continued east thru Fallon, past Sand Mountain, over Sand Springs Pass, across Labou Flat and the naval bombing range and then north up Dixie Valley Road. I missed the turn at first to Coyote Canyon and had to double back about a mile. I was distracted chatting with Jacob about the history, geology, earthquakes, etc in the area.

Coyote Canyon is a picturesque canyon with a little hunters cabin, lots of pines, a neat rock “gate” formed by the fault running along the base of the canyon. Last earthquake (actually three of them in about 24 hours) shifted Stillwater and Fairview Peak Ranges about 30 feet for about 100 miles in the 1950s. We explored a bit and then proceeded to look for a “jeep trail” that would take us south a bit to East Lee Canyon. By the way on the way across the flat we followed three antelope for probably 1/4 mile as they meandered just ahead of us.

I found the trail rather quickly. It was moderately challenging, Had to do most of it in first and second gear, low range, as it crossed a lot of ravines crossing the alluvial fan of Coyote Creek. After about three miles we came to the trail into East Lee Canyon. Instead of an alluvial fan the mouth of this canyon is a 1/4 mile wide flat bottomed wash bounded by gravel cliffs on both sides. We went along a trail on the south gravel cliff for a ways until it appeared that it might never join the trail in the wash bottom. We doubled back and followed the wash bottom trail. Evidently this trail goes on to the summit of the range about 12 miles in. We only went about four miles and turned back to Dixie Valley.

After joining the Dixie Valley Road agin we went south and turned off east and then north to Wonder Mountain. Wonder Mountain is the site of extensive gold and silver mines between the Louderback Mountains and the west branch of the Clan Alpine Mountains. We spent quite a bit of time wandering around the diggins and exploring the remains of the mill site.

After leaving Wonder we travelled around the east side of Chalk Mountain; silver, lead and zinc mines, We got back to highway 50 at about 4:30. Headed home from there, got back to Fernley at about 6:00pm. A very good day!

After Action Report

I took a few hits yesterday on that jeep trail. Probably some of the damage from the Bolivia trek too.

Guess I should pull off the engine skid plate and hammer out some of the dents.

Or perhaps even replace with an RCI Skid Plate.
