2014 Gas Mileage

I don't believe anyone has started a thread regarding mileage for the 2014's.

My 2014 SR5 is averaging 16.6 mpg, with very conservative, mostly city driving. I have almost 8,000 miles on it, and the air pressure in the tires is always factory-correct, or a pound or two higher, all around. I have taken some longer interstate trips, and my best tank was 18.9.

My 2010 SR5 used to average around 19 mpg, driving under the same conditions.

Here is a link to my Fuelly: Black SR5 (Toyota 4Runner) | Fuelly

Browsing Fuelly, it appears that the 2014's are averaging 17.7, and the 2010's are at 18.7.

My only thought is that the transmission may need to be re-flashed. The truck doesn't upshift as quickly as it should, even if I'm gentle with the accelerator.

How are the other 2014's faring?

I don't have a fuelly and support for any of this, but in mixed driving (mostly city) I'm getting a little over 18. Pure freeway driving I'm seeing 22-23. (I have 3000 miles on the ODO).

The 18 figure is from my pump to pump calcs.

The 22 + figure is from the computer after a reset, and right after a fill up. I have to really baby it to get 23. I'm seeing ~22mpg at 65-70mph

I have aggressive BFG AT tires that I run at 45 PSI in town and 20 PSI on the trail and have less than 5,000 miles. I just did a 2,147 mile trip last week with 651 of those miles at 10 mph or lower in 4 LOW 4X4 on steep and rock inclines and descents at high altitude and my life time average is still 18.802 MPG.

I don't think you have a problem at all with the vehicle. I think there is a lot of technique involved in getting great gas mileage out of a low mpg rated vehicle.

Even though there will be a LOT of ridicule on this forum for saying so, there are a lot of pulse and glide techniques that can be used on "any" vehicle. I use them all the time.

PS, I have a fuelly account but no longer use it. All my numbers are hand computed and I do not rely on the mpg indicator.

My best tank was 440 miles @ 24.425 mpg actual

That's because the '14 has an all-new engine, 6-spd transmission, and strengthened powertrain including HD shocks. The HP and TQ are up 20%, the shift points are later, and premium tires are standard equipment.

Ergo, mileage is down and noone wants to talk about it.

I could certainly try this technique, and I appreciate you mentioning it. It just seems odd that it's the same powertrain as my 2010 and same driving environment, but I'm getting ~2.5 worse mpg.

My numbers are coming from Fuelly, but they're within .1 of my mpg indicator.

The 1GR-FE Engine has not changed in the '14 Model. Its the same Dual-VVTi 1GR-FE that has been in the '10+ FJ Cruiser & 5th Gen 4Runners.

There is no difference in vehicle between the '10-'13 and the '14. In only 8K miles it could be just that you drove on winter gas up until April or something common. Give it a full year and then compare.

I get about 18.5 to 19 on my daily commute (60 Fwy/ 40 City) plus a little weekend around town driving.

On trips I get from 18 to 21 generally depending on what portion of the trip, travelling up or downhill, wind etc.

On one VERY head windy trip I got 16.5. If I was doing only in city driving it would be that or lower I think.

Never gotten 22 or over, but that would require a relatively flat long distance mellow speed ride, and from my house, nothing is within range without going over a lot of high passes or up into the mountains.

This was with a 3 in lift in front, 265 AT tires and a roof rack. I've recently lifted the rear 2 inches and am still waiting my first full tank with it...

[Edit] BTW, these figures are on regular (87) gas. I ran premium initially, then switched to regular and saw no difference in mileage, power, pinging or anything else other than a slightly less light wallet. [/edit]

Judging by his location, I'd say the terrain is playing significantly into it. But that's one of a thousands pointless rabbits we can chase in this thread (and since this is an internet forum, and a thread about gas mileage, we'll probably chase them all anyway.)

Edit: Just realized he mentioned his 2010 was getting better mpg in same conditions... Disregard my first sentence.

I have a stock 2014 LE.. My mileage indicator says I get 17.2 (I have about 3k miles on it). however, my own calculations show 17.9, consistently.

The 2014's got a 6 speed?

It looks more (to me) like a guy waving his hand over his head in a "whoosh" fashion..as in you missed the original joke. :bounce:

Ah okay, I Google searched the picture and it came up in a ton self-help books and meditation stuff as the act of self-realization or some weird hippie dippie stuff. :der:

I'm so busy correcting misinformation these days I miss jokes sometimes.

It wasn't even a joke, you chuckleheads .... it was pure unaldulterated Sarcasm.

:argue:

At least The Waco Kid got it. Guess I need to make my sarcasm more sarcastic.

2400 miles on odo

87 octane 20.3mpg, slight pinging

89 octane 22.0mpg

suburbia/light hwy driving

+1 there is a wiki about these engine and difference in octane rating used can cause a few changes.

2013 4runner limited 2wd stock 3rd row seat.

HWY driving on consistent road and speeds bewteen 60-70MPH, average speed 65MPH ,when MPGs were checked. This was after several runs each time. 4 times on 87 octane 3 times on 91 octane.

When I switched over from 87 to 91 I waited till 3 tank fulls and drove it like I stole it before checking the 91 octane MPG.

MPG: 19.9 on 87 octane.
Same road same driving 21.7MPG on 91 octane.

Best I ever got was 22.5MPG, but that must have been on a road where there was a descent because I have not been able to get that again.
