2014 T4R Remote Start

That, and potential weird electrical problems. Someone here had a random misfire and other gremlins that was finally tracked down to an aftermarket remote start.

Granted, the range on the OEM totally sucks, as does the 15 minute timer. I just don't understand why the engine stopping when you unlock or open the door is a negative. You're going to have to put the keys in the ignition anyway, the engine is warmed up, so the start is easy on the engine and battery, and it prevents anyone from jumping in and driving away. What am I missing here?

I have OEM remote start on my 2011 4Runner and works like a charm during autumn/winter season. I also like the added security of keeping the truck locked while running for 10 minutes. Car thefts spiked in the winter months (as reported in local news) when cars left unattended.

Do yourself a favor and get the latest technology. There is going to be a EOL for the smart start since it's still on at 2g aka edge system. A Compustar drone unit is on America's largest 4g LTE network from Verizon. What this means is continued support and functionality for years to come vs EOL slated for 4Q of 2016. With 4g, your commands come thru much faster and alerts come in way faster. Compustar is ahead of the curve not behind it.

Realistically that's only 2 years away. Do you invest in hardware that's going to be obsolete and possible require you to get a new system? Must people are in vehicles much longer now, i average 7 years personally.

It says AutoMate on the starter key fob.
The only way the engine will turn off if I step on the brake before I put the key into ignition. So far it works like I want it to.

AutoMate is the brand. It is NOT an OEM remote start. That is why it works like it does.

Yes but It's was installed by Toyota before I drove it off the lot. Maybe they use that as standard now.

I have a Genuine OEM Toyota remote starter kit for a 2012 4Runner that I mistakenly purchased for my 2014. Selling pretty cheap if anyone is interested. It's all plug and play but you will have to get your key programmed at the dealer.:doh: My loss is your gain on this one.

I've got a pricey Viper remote start & alarm system, I love it! Never got the trashy OEM remote start so I've only got my one FOB to carry to lock and unlock the car and then buttons on the side to start it and go into different modes.

I had the dealer instal the OEM remote start when I purchased mt new TEP. Glad I had the dealer install because there was a problem during install. The ckmputer in the steering column would not recognize the remote start during thus not letting the vehicle start. The dealer ended up changing that computer. I can't imagine what kind of nightmare that could have been had I installed a aftermarket system.

I am like most, the factory Toyota remote start is very annoying. I guess technically it gets the job done (heating/Cooling), but I hate that I it dies when you get in. Start up is the hardest thing of an engine, and having to do it twice isn't my first choice. Even the sales guy at the dealership told me no one that works there understands the reasoning of this.

This. Starting an engine, even when warm, is the most difficult thing for it.

I really don't understand why it's not possible to change that in the computer either! I definitely understand the engine shutting off if you press the brake without the key in it (so someone can't hop in and drive off without the key) but to shut off with the door opening even if you have the key is stupid and not well thought out.

I LOVE having remote start on my work truck since we get a lot of snow here in Flagstaff but the 4R gets parked in the garage so I don't need it on that. Although I did have a Viper remote start on my Dodge Dakota pickup and it always worked very well and I never had any electrical issues due to it. However, quality of unit and more importantly, quality of installer can definitely affect this!

I know their different generations(I did it on my 3rd Gen) but it should still be fine you'll just need a bypass. I ordered a 35 dollar crimestopper. And a 15 dollar bypass. It told me I'd need a bypass but I didn't. Then with wire loom, some 12 gauge, zip ties, and time I installed it for 65 bucks. The biggest pain was finding the right relay since no where had the one I needed in Stock. All in all 65 bucks.

I just searched for info on installing a remote start and the newest thread dates back to 2012.

Does anyone have any opinions on the factory remote start on the 2014 T4R? Dealer quotes $500 option, but I found it here for far less. Supposed to come with instructions

from what I remember oem and most aftermarket will shutdown when the door is opened if the engine is running.

from what I have been told (3rd party info) is that the PTS systems re-initializes a new code between the fob and security system every time you touch the door handle.

when this happens the code that the remote start is using to start and keep the vehicle running is no longer valid and the reason the engine shuts down.

remember this is 3rd party info and just speculation and not actual facts and only applies to PTS vehicles.

I don't care for the OEM remote start at all. Mostly cause of the limited range.
I'm in the process of getting a Compustar Drone remote starter with EZGO proximity key-less entry for the '15. Hope it is as good as people claim.
