You're right, this does look odd, but it is a design feature that seems to be trending in Asian vehicles and seems to have originated with PSA in Europe.

Once such a styling feature is incorporated in the design, you can't change it without adversely affecting the aerodynamcs (and the wind noise) of the design.

Ugly? Yes, but there ain't much you can do about it until the manufacturer re-does the whole design.

Those AB6 lights look like the truth, at this point though might as well wait to see what the production version of these are all about. The AB6 aren't cheap either.

I know a lot of you guys are waiting on updates and so are we! Came back from the holidays (hope it was great for you guys as well!) with some good news!

These headlights were in production all along. They will start delivering next month in August. We will start taking pre-orders later this month? We will confirm once we know they're in transit.

As for DOT compliance, we asked about that as well. All Morimoto XB headlights are designed to pass all FVMSS108 standards, so these 4Runner shouldn't be a problem. Here is an example for their 15-17 F150 lights:

We will of course ask for a 4Runner one once they supply us one.

Last but not least, the retail price will be set at $1150 shipped anywhere in the U.S. Priced very similar to the Tacoma and Tundras from what we have seen.

It actually doesn't appear as if the F150 units meet all of the requirement either, meaning that they are not allowed to mark the lenses as they did. You can't say "I met part of the regs so I'll mark them as meeting the specs.

That said, IF (big IF) they can actually get these properly certified, then the price is not unreasonable. The cost of testing is quite expensive and the testing lab must have land in Arizona or Florida for the weathering testing in addition to the costs of research to get it designed.

If they mark the housings - and they don't comply - then the manufacturer and importer may have left themselves open to a charge of felony fraud.

No aftermarket headlight, such as this one, will ever be certified. Although an inspection would never fail these. Light output / pattern on Tacoma sets look great.

BINGO. Since manufacturers self-certify, a certification (for example marking a lens with the symbols showing certification) on a product when it does not meet the regs, is a criminal offense and may involve jail time in addition to the fines and recalls.

It’s no retrofit. But these will destroy stock 4Runner lights. The Tacoma OEM headlights are much better than ours, and the XBs were clearly better in terms of low beam. The high beam is too concentrated though, but I have Aux lights for that.

Damn. They look great. Was getting ready to do a full bulb upgrade on my headlights and this seems much nicer. No stupid ballasts, right?
Hard to justify 1200-ish dollars, but I bet I can stretch my insulin a few days. :shrug:
