2014 Wrangler Unlimited vs 4Runner

First off, after much back and forth between the wrangler unlimited and the 4Runner, I was able to take extended test drives in both vehicles. Jeep first, seemed to meet my needs but I still had reservations. Seats were not that comfortable after about an hour of driving, and the overall driving experience was, well, still very Jeep like. Still, the 4 door is a much improved vehicle. I left the Jeep dealer thinking I would end up in a Jeep, since I've had jeep in my blood for over 25 years (yet I HATED driving them on the road).
Next stop, Toyota dealer, to drive a SR5 Premium. Same deal, the dealer gave me the keys and said take it as long as you want. Obviously, the 4Runner is the more refined vehicle, I knew that going in. That being said, the 2 vehicles match up pretty close in size and purpose, with the Jeep being more off road oriented and the 4Runner more on road.
I was planning another 1 1/2 hour test drive, to really get the feel of the vehicle. I left the dealer lot, drove 1/4 mile and merged onto the freeway. At that point the contest was over. There is no comparison between these 2 vehicles. 4Runner is superior in every respect of on road driving. It clearly showed me the Jeep is still a Jeep, and I would hate driving it daily in very short order, even with it's refinements. The 4Runner is smoother, quieter, handles better, more power, better seats, stereo, etc etc etc. The Jeep did not excel in any area over the 4Runner. Even the top off thing, Jeep is noisy with the freedom panels removed. Open the huge sunroof on the 4Runner, windows and back window and you have a similar experience, minus the noise.
Now I know the Jeep will excel in severe off road situations, but at what cost? Furthermore, what about the drive to and from your off road destination? I am sold on the 4Runner, and now have to decide on which model, which will be questioned in another thread.
I posted this, because in my search, I found very little real info I could rely on. I hope this helps somebody in my shoes decide. For history, I currently own an 83 CJ7, had an 80 CJ5, 99Sahara, 04 Rubicon auto(worst transmission EVER put in a vehicle), and an 05 Unlimited Rubicon (best off road vehicle ever built, IMHO, but horrible on road with lift tires etc). I also owned an 83 toyota SR5 pickup (mountain goat) and a 91 SR5 Toyota pickup, as well as several full size rigs, both gas and diesel.

I own both, love both simple decision:

If you are going to do anything other than wheel the vehicle get the 4runner.

Kind of sounds like you made your decision. I have had 3 jeeps and 2 4runners along with a H3. The 4runner is the most refined. The main deciding factor would be how extreme do you want to go for off road capability and are you willing to trade daily driving comfort for that capability. The jeep would be easier to modify for extreme situations. The 4runner would be more than capable for mild to medium trails. Another thing to consider is the 4runner is more reliable.
If you can get the trail with the rear locker, although a SR5 with the A-Trac is pretty good at transferring power to the wheel that has grip.

I've always thought the added two doors removed much of any advantage the jeep may have had over the 4R.

I understand people buying the 2 door jeep.
I understand people buying the 4R
But picking the four door jeep over the 4R makes little sense. And the price difference is no where what it used to be on equally equipped models.

I have absolutely made up my mind. I posted this here so anybody searching this same topic can read my impressions of the two vehicles side by side.

Have owned several of Both (Jeeps and Toyotas) 4runners/ Fj Cruisers and Tacomas. Jeeps GrCherokees, Cherokees and Wranglers (Rubicons and Saharas) thus my screen name.
I drive a T4R LE now. Has never left me saying, "IF I only had more off-road capability".
Buy a used Quad to satisfy the hardcore off-road taste. Never could figure out why anyone would $40k+ and go beat the crap out of a rig.
Anyway. Glad you made the right pick. Enjoy

I had a lifted '05 TJ, she was beautiful, just beautiful. I had to sell her and GiGi's '96 3rd Gen to make room for a reliable, safe, comfortable, roomy, beautiful BR SR5 I have now. I wanted a JKU so badly, almost bought one on more than one occasion. Reason why I did not get a JKU: (to hopefully help some more folks in their buying decision).
1. So, so much money for "just a Jeep." Along with what OP said, you cannot even begin to compare the ride quality and noise levels.
2. No curtain airbags. How many airbags do our 4Rs have....? 8...?!
3. The back seat. Have you every sat in the backseat of a JKU? I just could not do that to my 2 kids. So very uncomfortable, not to mention the no support middle of the backseat. Our 4Rs backseats RECLINE, for crying out loud...haha..
4. Scared to maybe get a "lemon".....Have you ever read the Wrangler forum?...squeaky seats, ticking heads, leaks from tops, electrical gremlins, death wobble (with lifts), crummy paint jobs, etc.
5. The mod list for a JKU is a lot longer than 4R to get to the look I like in a vehicle.

OP, we look forward to seeing your new ride. Welcome to the Forum. :driving:

I may have to get one of the Rubicon Unlimiteds if they come in a deisel in a couple years. Which has lots of rumors surround it, but looking like the Grand Cherokee engine may be going in soon.

I have a cj7 beater. Wont go even where my f350 diesel can without breaking. Crappy axles, tranny, gearing etc. its a ranch vehicle that hasn't been washed in years. Have a honda rubicon which is awesome but a little tight with wife and kids. Honestly, sfa is way over rated unless you are building a crawler on 37's. Toyota blew the FJ design. They could have put Jeep out of business. I will always yearn for a jeep for nostalgia purposes but i have had my eyes opened once and for all regarding the current wrangler.

IF they do that I will have one if not two in my driveway!

SF jakey- I think your analysis is spot on. The jeep may excel in extreme off-road situations, but how often is that.

The 4Runner is great at everything. Years ago I had a CJ7 to take me up to the mountains in ski season. I found that the jeep made that 2hr drive feel like a 3hr drive. It just wasn't as practical for most situations.

Enjoy your 4Runner.

Hands down, the Jeep will out perform the 4runner on extreme offroad trails.
There are more suspension and bumper options too.

Hands down, the 4runner is a better on-road vehicle.

If you are looking for extreme, go Jeep. If you are looking for easy to moderate difficult trails, go 4runner.

It is nice to be able to comfortably drive a few hundred miles on road, cruse a few hundred miles offroad and then drive back home. Sure you can build a Jeep up big but I'm seeing them trailered to the trails. That doesn't sound like fun to me. Most of the trails I do are in at one end and out somewhere else.

Also, the 4runner will out live the Jeep.

I have both vehicles. A 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara and 2014 4Runner Limited. Although my Wrangler is "loaded" with leather, nav, heated seats, etc. I don't prefer it as my every day driver. As you stated, the Wrangler's have definitely come a long way, but the comfort of my 4Runner is far greater.

Example. . my 2012 Wrangler was purchased 2 years ago and it has 7,000 miles on the ODO.

My 2014 4Runner was purchased 5 months ago and it has 17,200 miles on it.

I'm pretty sure that sums it up.

Funny how many of us have both a Jeep and a T4R. Jeep is my weekend toy for off roading and mild adventure trips. T4R is wife's daily driver that we will use for longer weekend runs that will have the capability to get me out of most of the stupid stuff I will wind up doing wishing I was in my Jeep.

It's easy to see that the 4Runner excels where the Jeep fails, and vice versa. The only thing stopping the 4Runner from being a serious trail rig is the stiff IFS. Throw in a linked FJ80 axle and you have a superior rig. But the tradeoff of course is some on-road comfort and stability. Can't always have it all!

Southern Utah

I live in South Western Utah & often go to Moab. I have both a 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) Rubicon & a 2013 Toyota TE 4Runner.

I have 115,000 miles on the six year old Jeep & 25,000 miles on the ten month old Toyota.

The Jeep is lifted, has 35 inch tires & has many modifications. I have driven the Jeep on several thousand miles of off road trails rated 1-5 and at most a few hundred miles on trails rated 6-7 (based on Moab 10 step rating). The Jeep handles the trails easily & inspires confidence.

FYI, IMHO I do know how to drive off road and I know my limits.

I have new DuraTrac tires and some added armor on the Toyota. The Toyota handles the trails rated 1-3 easily. I just got drove a 4 rated trail this week in my Toyota in Moab & it succeeded; but there was too much banging, dragging and had 1 wheel in the air occasionally. I'll need more armor, a winch & more to continue driving the 4 rated trails.

I agree basically overall with what has been said here comparing the two vehicles.

The 4Runner is way better on the road with the IFS and all. It is a joy to drive on the highways and is still fun to drive off road. I can drive 80mph on our freeways easily and feel safe.

The Jeep inspires more confidence off road with the live SFA and all. One other note, it is very fun to to drive off road with the the roof and doors off & the front window folded down in a Jeep. Opening the moon roof on the Toyota does not compare. Jeep wins that one. On the highway, with all of my modifications on the Jeep, I only drive 65mph on the highways to feel safe.

There are many reputable shops that support modified Jeeps in Utah. I am having a difficult time finding a good shop that supports a modified Toyota. So, that is a factor too if you want to have a shop modify your off road vehicle.

Very good comparison of the two platforms. :thumb3:
The 4R is definitely not a crawler. However, given the type of off-roading you seem to do a lot, why did you choose the 4Dr JKUR?
