2015 - 2016 4runner questions

Ok I should have added this. I'm at work and trying to do too many things at once.

I have a 10 foot row boat that widens out on the side but narrows in the front. With a wooden modification that sits on the front (as the boat is a few inches wider than the roof rack, it sits fine on the front.

But looking at the new roof rack, what would be a good way to sit it on top? Looks to me the widest part of the boat will sit right over the front part of the roof rack.

Since I am considering a 2016 4runner, this does concern me. The kayak I can figure out as I can always get a side carrier for it. But can't do that with a boat.

one of the reasons I'm looking at getting a 4runner is to be able to get/haul a kayak.

Is a 'side carrier' one of those cradles in which the kayak kind of leans at an angle on top of the vehicle?

Thanks

Though you haven't asked about it, you should be aware that there will be a drop in mileage with the 5th gen. My '06 averaged 21 mpg, my '15 averages 17 mpg. Also, you may be somewhat disappointed in the re-tuning of the V6. It produces more peak horsepower, but it seems to be at a loss of low range torque. Other than those two complaints, I have no regrets about going from a 4th gen to a 5th. Every other aspect is far superior.

How so? I thought they were more like 150 series LCs.

i meant figuratively, not literally. every aspect of the 5th gen is close to what the 100 series is than what the 4th gen, and especially the hilux based 4runners.

they're not 'more like 150's they actually are 150s

All of the 5th gen trims have the shorter side rails. However, I have found that the Yakima crossbar setup that I used for my 3rd gen fits nicely over the front doors, giving you the extended length you would like. It's not a perfect fit, but works well enough for most applications. I carry a couple of 20+ ft, 20 lb outrigger canoes on top of my T4R using this setup. The only issues I've had with the front crossbar moving is when driving into 40+ mph head/crosswinds at interstate speeds.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. I was pretty certain that it was a 150 series platform.

In general the 5th Gen is light years ahead of the Gen 4 off-road, other then noted it also has stronger components, less of a ridiculous front overhang(although still way too big), and does not look hideously ugly like the Gen 4.

The Hideously Ugly front end on the 5th Gen . Is why I'm still driving the 3rd Gen.. Hoping for the 6th Gen to be buyable . That bullhead bottom feeder fish head/ Darth Vader fascia . Really?

Still drunk from last night?

I changed it up a little, but the truth still remains. It needs a make over on the front fascia.

Aw man, you mean I missed the unedited version?! Bummer I bet that was entertaining. Funny how different our taste can be. I didn't want anything older than a 14 because I wanted me some fish face 4runner. Constant reminder that I shoulld be fishing.

I just love how sinister it looks.

SR5 is part time. It used a dial to engage the 4WD versus the manual shift lever of the Trail and early 5th Gen SR5s.

Is that a 'bad thing'? AWD, 4wd... isn't needed all the time. Actually, not needed most of the time in the USA.

Am I wrong?

Interesting. I looked at both Yakima and Thule to find a front clamp on bar fit, to no avail. Hence a Gobi rack is on order to carry my surf skis. Whomever at Toyota designed the half of a rack on the new 4runners wasn't keeping paddlers in mind...

Depends on your usage/perspective. I'm fine with part time. I leave mine in 2WD until I need 4WD (basically when the T/C starts making itself heard). Some people believe they need to be able to leave it in 4WD all the time.

I'm in the same boat as OP, except I'm coming from a 2WD 4Runner and looking at the Trails because of the manual Tcase.

1. Does the manual Tcase have 4 gears, i.e.: a Neutral?

2. The Premium was brought up as a package worth every penny. Can anyone elaborate on what is included in that package?

3. KDSS: I've heard of it and know it's the suspension, but don't know it's advantages or disadvantages. Can someone explain? Is it "standard" on any of the Trims or an option on a select few.

Thanks!

Yes. 2WD > 4HI > N > 4LO

Softex Synthetic Leather with heated fronts and Sunroof (maybe a couple other things, but this is the big difference)

KDSS is Kinetic Dynamic Suspension and is only offered as an option on Trail models.

Advantages are that it helps reduce body roll around corners. It is also supposed to help with articulation off road.

Disadvantages are that it costs more, decreases ground clearance by approx. 2 inches, makes it a little more complicated to do a lift kit, and has the could be another system to give out in high mileage applications , but from what I've read there has been minimal issues with the system.

Here's a video for KDSS
