2015 Limited 4x4

Traded in my 2006 White 2x4 on Friday for a 2015 Limited 4x4; did not really want or need a 4x4, but everything else about the car was awesome. I mean, I am sure it can come in handy, but it was not a necessity to have that particular feature. I love the car; it is awesome from head to toe, except for the fuel economy. What a bummer. Is there anything I can do to improve this. I assume the lackluster fuel economy comes from the fact that it has all time 4wd and the tires on the limited are a bit larger than on the other models. With my 2wd I could get about 385-400 miles out of a tank and it lasted me a decent amount of time for driving short distances in town and periodic interstate travel. I have only driven about 135 miles since Friday and I have a little more than half a tank left. The tank was topped off when I left the dealership, so keep that in mind. Maybe I just got spoiled with the 2wd's gas economy.

You are gonna get between 16-21 mpg just exactly like the sticker says. You could take out all the seats, carpet and interior and get a bit better but that's it. Did you not look at the fuel efficiency before you bought it?

I did, but it is getting less than what is estimated. I know it's just estimated, but does a new car have a break in period, where that also might affect mileage? I also know mileage is affected by how much city/interstate driving you do as well. It's just been about 15 years since I had a 4x4. Thanks.

Maybe it does have something to do with breaking it in. The first few tanks were in the 15-17 range and now I stay between 17-18.5. I usually get about 330-370 per tank.

MY 14 LTD has about 33,800 miles (14 months old). Initial mileage was around 15 or so until i got about 4000 miles on her. Now average is 18 mpg. Right in the sweet spot. Yours should improve with the miles (to a point).

After a few thousand miles of initial break in my mileage went up. Before any mods (lift, etc) i stayed a solid 19-20mpg in mixed driving, could get low 20's all highway. I thought that was great for this beast.

I do not have a lead foot.

I'm getting around 16 MPG on my third tank of gas on my '15 Limited. My '12 Limited was getting around 17 MPG. Both RWD.

Choosing RWD would not have made a huge difference. Frankly, if the delta between the two is significant enough for you to worry, then you bought the wrong vehicle.

Nope, did not buy the wrong vehicle, I was just curious. My last 4 runner was bought used, and was a RWD, so it has already been broken in, as I bought it with about 75K miles on it.

This is my first new 4 runner, only had 6 miles on it , so I was just curious if there was a breaking in period and how that might affect gas mileage early on. I read the fine print, know what the estimated fuel economy is, etc. Just wanted to see how others with the same exact model noticed any changes when bought new, once they broke in the vehicle as relates to gas mileage. I know a 4 runner is not a gas saver, and if I had wanted a gas saver, I would have bought a Camry.

not much difference on mpg between the 2wd and 4wd version, +1 mpg on the 2wd version compared to the 4wd. 17-22 vs 17-21.

non ethanol gas will give you +1 mpg more than ethanol mixed.

after say 10-20k miles you should see on avg +1 mpg.

different season gas will vary your mpg by +1 to +2 mpg (vs winter blend)

also using a remote start to warm up your vehicle, all bets are off on getting decent mpg per tank.

mostly city driving will kill your mpg. this engine does not sip gas in constant city driving. I drive 30 miles round trip to work every day at 74 mph and I still only get 16-17 mpg.

but its the nature of having a 4runner and has been like that since I've had my first one back around 1998.

I get about 320 smiles per tank at about 16-18 SmilesPerGallon.

Try resetting your AVG MPG by bringing up that display and holding the display button down until it resets.

Congrats on the new 4R though!

the stopping and starting...

it the constant stop start in the city. put the display on the average MPG to show you what you're getting and watch it just fluctuate constantly. i found driving the speed limit really help fuel economy and i live in Pittsburgh with lots of hills. keeping it in the ECO bar is good. when traveling long, use cruise control because it is always using the ECO drive. i had mine up to 17 MPG when i traveled a short distance using the cruise control, but back in city life it's back to 10, 11, or 12 MPG's

I don't know if this is fact but this is what I've noticed.

When you use CC it will actually just keep the "Eco" light on permanently because you're not personally controlling the throttle. However, if you go to the AVG MPG display you'll see that that bar is still on and will actually go into the non Eco mode much more (When going up hills to maintain that speed instead of simply throttling off a bit to stay in Eco mode).

Anyone feel free to critique me if I'm wrong ..

I was getting atrocious MPG on my '15 LE. Brand new, it was getting 11mpg. after about 600 miles, I'm getting 14mpg.

It could be any one of several factors.

- Break-in
- Extreme cold weather. I first picked up the truck in February.
- Winter gas

Still waiting to get to the "as advertised" MPG...

Have you tried resetting your AVG MPG since it is now warmer and the truck is a month old?

37k on my odometer and overall I'm at 20.5 mpg. 20 miles one way to work, 90% highway and I'm going 60-70. Keep in mind I'm in Houston, almost no hills anywhere and I try to stay out of traffic (staying late or going home early from work).

I think winter gas/temps definitely have something to do with it. I reset my dash MPG calc almost every time I fill up, as well as reset the trip OD, and when I calculate my mileage from trop odo/gallons purchased, it is usually exactly the same as what the vehicle has calculated.

That being said, all winter I was getting about 17.3-17.5 MPG. My last tank (first fill-up in March) I got 18.2, and my current tank I'm getting 18.5 without changing driving habits. For the record I don't have a lead foot, but typically go 5 mph over the limit, with a mix of city/freeway with some hills hills at ~4500ft elevation.

Well here is hoping it improves; so far, I am getting nowhere close to the advertised MPG; my first tank saw about 13.5 mpg, not even close to the sticker of 17/21 mpg and I am reading many complaints about that. Hoping as things continue to break in, mpg gets somewhere close to the range of what sticker says.

My other Toyota was spot on for mpg, but it was well broken into when I purchased it used several years back.
