Your little analogy makes no sense. LR's can outwheel most of Toyota's offerings if you compare them off the dealer lot. A modified Toyota may close that gap significantly. Also, Land Rover quality has been improving. It's not up to Toyota standards, but the experience that I as well as family and friends have had with these newer LR's has been stellar. I don't always buy cars with reliability as a number one goal, that would get boring quick. I would be stuck with a bunch of Camry's then. :barf: I've enjoyed the LR's and that is all that matters. I hope you own one someday before you make assumptions on their capabilities. BTW, I don't drink. :cheers:

Not sure why but I find this hysterical. If you wheel enough I have to believe you're seeing a few Rovers. They're usually the ones pulling Jeeps out of the mud. (To be fair, I've seen a lot of classic RRs get pulled out of stuff too. No lockers and no TC is a tough combo.)

I live where I live, for wheeling. Don't see many Rovers on the trails, but a few Discos and once in a great while, a Defender. I have seen 1 modern RR on a trail, the beginning of Black Bear Pass, which had a flat tire.

Not much mud around here, mostly rocks, which make short work of P metric tires and body work.

Try one! They are not only meant for the road. These are not crossovers. Google the specs, it will explain the advantages better than I ever could!

You do understand that one of the Range Rover's intended purposes is to perform well on the road as well, right? You can't really compare a Defender to a RR. A bit stupid if you ask me. For sole off-road use, I would rather beat on a Defender. Much simpler vehicle to mend. It is a totally different experience as well. For the best of both worlds, nothing tops the RR. Even the Disco's are fantastic.

Defender is a completely different vehicle. Underpowered, but capable suspension and drive train. I assume it has lockers, but can't recall. I have not driven one off road, so this is based on what I've read. I did test drive one at the dealer ~10 years ago. It's essentially a modern version of a Series Land Rover. Noisy and uncomfortable inside. No comparison to any modern 4Ruunner or Rover in terms of comfort and on-road driving.

Not just LR. I don't discriminate. The same can apply for all my other Euro's(BMW's, MB's, Jag's, Porsche's, etc.). If you bought cars solely on reliability then you will never get to enjoy the benefits and quirks of the "non-reliable" cars. That is an un-carguy approach IMHO. I love the LR3/Disco 3. Dare I say that I've found it reliable. :tape: A blast to drive IMO. The HD package is a bonus.

The older LC's are fantastic vehicles as well.

Yeah, there's some guys around here that just look for any posts where someone says good things about the 5th gen so they can trash it. I didn't bother reading through the whole thread, but what I saw from the peanut gallery was pretty laughable.

Because I can have both? I wouldn't say I am a fanboy since I try to enjoy all vehicles.

Considering that it was originally stated that:

It seems like the true fanboy-ness is coming out with the Rubicon test that Toyota did back in 09' to advertise the then-new 5th Gen.

I'm not hating on 5th Gens. They are a survivor. Pathfinder, Exploder, Rodeo's, and all those other competitors of the 90's are long gone. I normally find present-day Toyota to be pretty boring but I give them serious credit for keeping the 4Runner the way it should. Giving the TE model was a nice touch.

You keep making the assumption that I don't have any experience with Land Rovers and I don't know why. Their off-road capabilities are quite sufficient for someone like me but I would defer to guys that take these trucks to their limits, then post up pictures for me to enjoy.

Since this was a thread about a guy who just really liked his truck, I will say I have pushed this 4runner more than anything else I've owned and continue to be impressed when I then drive it to work on Monday. Maybe there are more capable trucks, maybe not but I love it and that's why I'm a member of a 4Runner forum.

I am very satisfied with the performance of my 4r. The travel of the gas pedal took a little but to get use to when gunning it as compared to my previous cars, but no big deal. I also am still getting use to the nose dive, I feel like I am on some bouncy ride.

But it handles great, way better than I thought it would, everything is just very responsive and "tight" may be the word? Not like a sports car or course, but I guess better than the older Explorer I had and the Ford Edge I had.

One thing great is the throttle response, I had a Ford Edge with the ecoboost, and the throttle delay was horrible in it, to the point of maybe dangerous if thinking to pull into speedier traffic real quick.

I have not taken it off-roading, I do not think there is even a place near me to do so.

Got it, and very true. I used to work on a friend's MG and another's Jag. Very fun to drive. Constant maintenance. And a Triumph GT6+. That was a great car. Wood dash, hand throttle...

That being said, I have much appreciation for the 4Runner we recently bought. Everything works as expected and I won't be constantly fixing it. As you said, I give Toyota credit for being the last one standing making this kind of truck.
