Yesterday I took my first road trip to pick up my Demello sliders from Missouri. Took it at speed limits most of the way due to semi wet weather in spots and cold. On one occasion I did pass a semi and put it all the way down to the floor. That is a rather impressive sound the engine makes and it did get the 4R moving along smartly. The VVT technology is a hoot when you get into it. I also got over 19 MPG on the trip.

To the op, do not drive any of the new 1/2 ton pickup trucks with 6 or more speeds and a big V8. You will probably get overly excited and the truck will still be getting 19 mpg or more.

Ummm wut.. This is a joke right?

I also find the sound pleasing when compared to most other 6's. Sounds like the old small block 305 Chevy IMHO.

Sure it's nothing compared to a modern V8 with an 8 speed, but light years ahead of the noise and vibration my gen2 3.0 makes!

I don't think I'd ever go as far as to use the word "impressive" for the engine or exhaust tone of my 4Runner but at least it's music to my wallets ears.

My diesels were a blast, until something broke that is or I pulled into the fuel station.

Do not drive any 3/4 ton or 1 ton diesel pickup trucks You will probably get overly excited and still be getting close to 19 mpg. lol

Hard to pick up what's sarcasm and not, but coming from a 2011 Ram 2500 4x4 with the 6.7l diesel, I can most assuredly tell you I never got anywhere close to 19mpg. Of course, all my emissions equipment was intact, but I could barely get 16.5-17 on the highway and only got 13.0-13.5 in town.

This was a DPF truck (no DEF) and I understand that hurts things a little. Also, I know a number of people with new half ton 4x4 crew pickups and they can not get 19mpg - even the ecoboosts. They're definitely not getting close to the EPA sticker numbers.

Just for some perspective.

Couldn't agree with you more. I'm coming from a Ford (w/DEF) and while there were times I saw 19mpg, even up to 20, it was always while babying it on a flat stretch of road rarely breaking 65.

YMMV what with gears, chassis, drivetrain etc... But unless it's an unloaded daily driver with high gears and driven "kindly" you'll be looking at 15-16 at best.

I miss my truck but love my 4runners mileage and reliability. My last year of owning my 2011 F250 cost me over 2k in repairs alone between emissions equipment and Fords inability to build a radiator.

That being said, it would take a lot for me NOT to trade my '14 TE for a clean '98 12valve Cummins or 03.5' 7.3 Powerstroke.

Only driven an EcoBoost once, sure seemed quick but can't comment on 1/2 ton rigs. Regardless of what power'ems, at least they are still making 4wd trucks.

Enjoy your rig OP! Glad your happy with the engine!

my 08' f250 crew cab with a full Banks system will do 0-60 in 6.7 seconds and i still get about 20mpg on highway running about 70mph. thats civic si times but in an 8000lb truck.

^ And the 6.4 is probably the worst of all power strokes. My dad is a dealer for Banks, so he has that setup and an exhaust on his '14 F350 and gets about 21hgwy. It's a sick ride I like it. He jokes that our little 4Runner drives a lot like his truck. Exactly that, it drives like an old diesel truck. Minus the diesel lol

There's no doubt there are some nicely modified new diesels out there returning great fuel mileage. However, that's after the owner spends thousands of dollars and throws away the factory powertrain warranty as well. With the cost of diesel powertrain equipment I personally wasn't willing to do that and take the gamble. Others are and that's cool.

Additionally, the above truck is what a $55,000 truck after it's all said and done? We're obviously comparing apple to oranges here. I spent $20,000 less on my 4Runner - that will easily pay for the fuel mileage difference - haha.

Here's some more perspective, let's compare the effect of fuel mileage and cost of ownership over 100,000 miles (more than many will keep their 4runner for, less than some). In 100,000 miles, at 18.5mpg and at $3.00/gallon gas, you'll spend $16,200 on fuel. What reasonable mpg would make us happy? 21mpg? Take that over 100,000 miles at $3.00/gallon and you spend $14,200. That's only a difference of about $2,000 over 100,000 miles and 7, 8, 9 years?

I present that not arguing one way or another but again to provide some perspective. A couple mpg's here and there really doesn't amount to a LOT of $$$ over the years.

(Interesting side note: diesel is now $0.90 more / gallon than gas here in OKC. Using the same figures as above but using $3.90/gallon for diesel, that diesel truck would need to get 24mpg over 100,000 miles to cost THE SAME as an 18.5mpg 4runner).

I have been away from SUV's for quite some time and this thing sounds much better than the huge vacuum cleaner sucking noise that my old GMC used to make. If I want to hear something that really sounds good, I will drive my Corvette with cold air intake, Corsa exhaust and get 30mpg while hearing those sweet sounds. I was mainly commenting on the improvement from the older trucks that got really lousy fuel mileage and sounded like a blow dryer. Give an old guy a break will ya?

Does the banks system include an dpf delete? Without regens, not to mention all the other emissions equipment, most of the new diesels can see 20mpg easy.

Not intending to start an argument or get further off-topic since online diesel discussions can be some of the most heated on the 'net. Glad your happy with your P-stroke and are getting good mileage to boot :thumb3:

To each his own but I'd have to give a lot more credit to the 6.4L's. I've owned a '11 6.7 scorpion and had an '10 F250 for work. Stock verse stock the 6.7 was absolutely a more refinded engine, but once you start to BOMB them the 6.4 seems to have waay more potential considering your already starting out with a twined engine straight from the factory.

To each his own though. I've owned one from each of the big 3 over the years and they've all been incredible trucks with their own pluses and minuses. No longer needing a diesel I couldn't be happier with my 4Runner and truly feel it's the most well built vehicle I've owned.

lol I learned this lesson when I sold my 04 v8 SE to get a Hyundai sonata when gas was 4.5x gallon.

in the end, you have to run the numbers like above to see the true cost of mpg difference.

if you look at it differently, its one maybe two less happy meal per tank in reality. (replace happy meal with : starbucks, Panera bread, donuts, etc).

I test drove a 2014 Limited this past weekend. Personally, I thought it felt slow and the V6 was rather noisy when pushed. Also, the noise was coarse, not refined. I didn't much care for it, compared to my '03 V8. YMMV.

No, the Banks system "works" with the original systems. It is completely reversible. The only thing I didn't change was the intercooler.

Maybe a bit of sarcasm since the grass is always greener on the other side.:D With that being said my 2007 Dodge 2500 4x4 crew cab work truck with the little Cummins 5.9 still gives me 18 mpg @ 75 mph with over 200,000 miles on the odometer. When it was new with the factory dinky tires & bumper on it I saw 20 mpg on the hwy most the time. The biggest problem is it's a Dodge! Both of the tail lights are held on with silicone and it has had a few front end rebuilds. In it's defense it does see off road duty almost daily on service roads or scouting new drilling locations. Any way to the OP enjoy your new ride because that's what really counts.

I have heard people say that Dodge uses a 300,000 mile engine and put it in a truck that only last 100,000 miles. The Cummins are great engines.

I have the '08 F550, Dad has the '08 F250. On a good day I get 11mpg, Dad gets 16mpg. I love the 6.4, but hate the mileage. If your seeing 20mpg with your DPF in tact please take a photo and send to Guinness!:trophy:
