)Yes, thankfully a chain. I recently had a guy brag to me about how he got rid of his Japanese cars and now had a German car that required "no engine maintenance." I asked him what he was talking about - like no oil changes?? 
He said no, and proudly told me it never needed to have a timing belt replaced. He was a bit "puzzled" when I told him the same was true of our 4Runners.

I had a timing chain on my 911 and it broke. The motors are worth more than the car. I'll just say that i don't have it any longer.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but i am new and can still only reply to old threads (this thread came up in my Google search for 2019 4runner Timing Chain). So please forgive me.
Do the 2019 4Runners use a Timing Chain? I would assume yes?

Yes, it has timing chain. Just fyi: 2019 has exactly the same power train (engine and transmission) as all models of 5th gen 4Runners-starting from 2010.

FWIW, I contacted my local dealer (who is shockingly candid) about maintenance when I hit the 100,000 mark. He advised me that the chain is designed to last the life of the engine and would therefore require no maintenance unless you encounter an issue.
The serpentine belt, that’s a different story.

Pretty much that’s how it works. These aren’t old Chevy 350’s, timing chains aren’t replaced every 50k. I prefer timing belts on my engines. Maintenance is usually every 100k and can be done in an hour or two. What kills timing chains is usually people not performing oil changes at their required intervals. Low oil will cause the chain to wear through the guides and sludge will block passages to the tensioner and the chain will not have the proper tension.
