2015 towing with non OEM size tire

Hey - need some advice to see if discount tire was just trying to get me to buy or if they are right.

2015 Limited And I tow a 16’ Boston Whaler (1,200 lb boat plus maybe 1000 for trailer). Say I tow 2,500 lbs.

Currently the truck has Eagle RS A 245 50 R20 tires with load 102H

I asked them to rotate and balance which they did but they said the tires are very unsafe because they are smaller (should be 24560r20) and lower load carrying.

I’m going on a 3 hour tow w boat this month and am concerned if I should get different tires. I still have 6/32 tread left.

Thoughts? Is this really unsafe?

You may not get many responses. The math is complex and we don't have enough data to give you good information. Basically, the load is carried by the volume of air, not the PSI. That's only part of the equation, load range ratings are also part of it. If you have a P-metric tire smaller than is specified OEM, you have decreased your overall capacity.
The tire shop recognized this and provided a warning. Without an engineer/expert present, that's about all you'll get. If you can find a load vs inflation table for your tire, you can determine for yourself.

Very true, very many variables.

However, OP is towing 2200# according to his post, and the tow rating stock is 5000#. I doubt that the tire changed reduced tow capability by more than 1/2.

I don't know the load rating of the Eagle RS but could they be talking about that?

My local Firestone won't mount or balance tires if they are not the correct rating for you vehicle.

Nevermind according to Goodyears site its fine. But its not the stock tire size either. Maybe policy not to go smaller?
