2015 Trail with Sunroof Issues

Welp, at only 31k (thank God its still under warranty, my sunroof decided that it wanted to start acting up. As a Toyota sales rep and 4Runner enthusiast I have often heard the debate about the Trail having a sunroof and the Pro not coming with one. Im pretty sure this is why Toyota chose not to put a sunroof in a primarily off road vehicle. Im not sure exactly what failed or what caused it to fail. I do know that the track is getting replaced and had to be ordered hopefully it will be done tomorrow. Im hate that everything has to be taken apart for the simple fact that it dramatically increases the chance for squeaks and rattles when put back together :nono: an I will loose my s**t over a random squeak or rattle!!!

When I was searching for a Trail I specifically wanted a standard Trail with Nav because I didnt want the sunroof and I didnt want KDSS, this is why!!

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Dang. Too bad you couldn't get them to put some sound insulation in while they were at it. Hopefully it turns out ok.

Should have them run some wires up there while they have it off. maybe a CB antenna cable or something, turn it into a positive that they had to take all of that off.
 
Curious what you were doing in a Trail that would cause a sunroof issue, and why you think the Trail would have been better off without it. :confused:

The slide assembly itself is almost $1300, so my guess is around $2k.
 
I hope it would only be a couple hundred bucks but Its probably more like a couple thousand. Imma guess $1000

I drive a TEP with sunroof and have second guessed my decision for this reason, I hear about a lot of sun roofs failing over time. I dont really understand why they are unreliable but this is the first ive heard of a 5th gen with this problem

I would try to close the roof and it would catch and prevent itself from closing. Opening it would cause the sunroof to stick or catch but would go back. It would do it every now and then and after inspecting multiple times, trying to clean it really good, it got to the point where I couldn't get it closed!

I was too!!! I haven't done anything to abuse it. I have gone offroad, ALOT, including across the US mostly offroad. Never any abuse though.

Yeah, ultimately its a hole in the roof. That presents all kinds of different obstacles. 1 its a controlled leak 2 loss of rigidity 3 less head room. Ive reached up while going through a car wash and felt water coming in so I know for a fact that water comes through. If I had it to do over I would absolutely NOT get one with a sunroof. Ol' well I guess this will be a good reason to upgrade to a Cement PRO!!
 
The 4Runners have had sunroofs far longer than than the 5th generation models have been out, so these aren't exactly unchartered waters and technology. I believe your concerns about them to generally be unfounded, though certainly unfortunate, and a very bad deal to have it happen to you, especially being that new. I've seen a few mentions about people not wanting a sun/moonroof, but everything I've seen has been a preference to having more headroom as opposed to mechanical concerns. I'm sure they fail on occasion, just as with any part. Roll of the dice.

For reference, I've had zero issues with mine on my 2002 with 330,000 miles, and it has seen right around two full year's worth of travels off-pavement. I've never had a leak, and only a few rattles to speak of that come around every now and again for a brief time, but it's quiet to this day and there hasn't been any slowdown with its motor. Maybe they fail a few more times out of a thousand units on average with the newer stuff compared to older, or perhaps not.

Sunroofs and no tops have been a part of 4wd drive vehicles for a LONG time. The argument against it is unwarranted. It's not as though you rolled the dice on some new tech and now you're paying the price for it.

Failures of any kind can happen. If you happen to find the perfect vehicle that never has issues then please enlighten us.

1). Of course it's a controlled leak. It's meant to drain into the catch tray and from there out of tubes which should be kept clean (see maintenance).

2). Less headroom argument. Well, not all of us are monsters with ungodly proportions. If you are one of these then by all means get one without. Not all of us are 7' tall and wear top hats. I'm 6' tall and I have not once had a headroom concern.

3). Less rigidity. Yeah, I hope all of these TEP's don't collapse upon themselves from the complete loss of rigidity not to mention all the other variants of offroad vehicles without solid tops.

Fact is..shit fails and you happen to have a reliable product with a not to common failure. It's ok to be upset about it but don't make it out to be more than it is.
 
OP is not helping the stigma attached to auto sales reps. There's much conjecture on your part of why Toyota omitted features from the PRO.
 
I've seen enough sunroofs fail/leak excessively that I wish I could've ordered my TEP without a sunroof. I don't ever use it though, don't even open the sun shade but I'm guessing it will start rattling like my 4th gen, which I never used either. Yeah, I could've settled on a TE non-premium but I liked some of the other stuff the TEP offered. OP- hope it works out for you.

all reasons why I got rid of a 2011 w/sunroof and replaced it with a 2015 without:guitar3:

glad this was dealt with under warranty.... if not id be welding sheet metal in its place

I could not agree with this post more!

I never had a system like KDSS, so I can't comment, but I specifically wanted to avoid a sunroof. But, I'd still take window cranks and controls off of a stalk if anyone would make 'em!
