2016 4Runner Oil Change

Note to self:

Be on the lookout for the NEW thread complaining about oil filter media breaking free and clogging oil passages.

This thread delivers.

This is like one of those super-rare unicorn threads that you always hear about, but never get the chance to see where it came from or how it started

Since you've mentiond it, well yes I have designed a few things.
I am a Metrologist by profession

<SNIP>

I've got an unrelated to the topic question. Why do tv weathermen always think it's a beautiful day when the forecast is for the 20th sunny and 98 degrees with 90% humidity with no chance of rain day in a row? To me a beautiful day is 70 degrees and less than 50% humidity and it rains once a week.

WOW, Thanks stir_fry_boy & Lester Lugnut for this info!!!

So, if Tex-Tac didn't replace the center tube on the filter to the original size that came in his plastic housing, is he running the risk of engine damage?

Asking because when I take mine in with the metal housing in hand, I want a seamless transition when I hand it over to the tech!

Be aware that the tech has probably never done it before. I performed the switch on my own at the dealer, and the tech was required to make a note in my service history that I used my own cup. He told me that if the cup fails, my warranty is voided for any damage it may cause. I told him that if I go with the plastic one and it breaks, it could leave my engine ruined for lack of oil, but if I use the metal one which won't break I won't be covered? He said "yep".

He admitted he personally had seen failures of the plastic cups.

It's easier just to do it yourself.

As mentioned before, I did not have to change out the center perforated tube from the original plastic one to the newer metal one. I installed the newer metal oil filter housing, with an cartridge filter from Toyota, without any problems but hey if you (or anyone else for that matter) feels differently about it and if you have any doubt and if it makes you feel any better it's your choice to switch them out?

I've checked and there have not been any problems whatsoever, no leakage, no problems re-Installing, etc., engine runs fine.

Do what makes you feel more at ease.

It seems that if the center perforated tube is not the correct length, the oil won't get filtered properly and it will be more like mixing in the cup instead of flowing in one direction. You probably may not have issues now, but for the long term, your engine may wear quicker due to lack of proper oil filtration.

I am 100% certain that the center tubes are different lengths. It's your engine.

In this cartridge filter design, the perforated tube is there to support the filter media just like the metal perforated tube that holds the filter media in a traditional spin-on filter. The most important aspect of the correct length tube is to allow the appropriate amount of crust to seal the filter ends, and to prevent collapse, especially if clogged. As long as the filter media is correct for the vehicle, holds up, doesn't collapse or break down, then everything is fine. However, given the heat, oil saturation, flow pressure, and spring pressure the unsupported paper media is subjected to, I would not want to risk using the shorter tube. We typically praise Toyota for reliable design and longevity. Changing the way the oil filter works doesn't make sense.

Once again what we have here is another post by an individual who can not read and comprehend a basic simple post and commenting on it.

By your post you are referring to an individual who's profession is described as being a "Meterologist". A Meterologist is one who's profession deals basically with the weather.

If you where to have read and comprehended what I stated by profession it is clear that I spelled out Metrologist which is a totally different profession. It is apparent that you did not at least look up the term Metrologist.

Take the time to look up in the dictionary or research the Internet on what a Metrologist profession consist of.

Have a good day.

You would be better served if you read the other posts about what tube length does instead of replying to a post that was a joke. You measure things. We get it. Instead of thinking "Toyota engineers don't know anything" and "I am smarter than them so I will just mod the most important part of the engine's reliability system" you could listen to the guys above who know what they are talking about. Just my opinion.

Metrology = measurement science with the exception of cartridge filter center tubes.

That makes sense. Thanks for the explaination!

I totally agree with keeping the design the same, and echo what 1engineer said about that the Toyota engineers know best, as they designed it.

".....better served?"......1engineer you seem to be bothered by this and making more out of "length tube" business more than anyone.

I stated my opinions and findings and that's it. After others have added their comments, basically it's up to the individual to decide what would be best for them to determine what choice they make.

All this is, is just information about an oil & filter change and that's it. Everyone is capable of making their own decisions on what to do and go about it.

I chose to not change out the center tube and use it that way. To me it works fine and I'm O K with it regardless of what others have stated. So why should it bother you so much on what I do or not do? Will this keep you awake at night? Not able to eat?

Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything specifically. If it makes you feel better/smarter to take out the center tube then go ahead I don't care. Why? Because it is your choice and as mentioned before everyone makes their own decisions.

I never said my way was the best. I just stated my findings and experience on changing the oil and filter and that's it.

You stated your OPINIONS, not findings. Of course you have the right to do that but I, and everyone else in this thread apparently, want to make sure that when some new guy comes along and reads this they understand that your opinions are incorrect and your idea of not using the center tube could be bad for the filtration system. We try to keep this sub forum as a good resource for those who want to know about the 4Runner. Good luck with measuring stuff.

All these new cars and trucks out today have the plates on the bottom for arrow dynamics. You know what arrows have? Points. Not flat plates. Points. And feathers. If Toyota wanted to give you the best MPG why doesn't the 4runner have feathers? They don't care about arrow dynamics, just making money.

It would be way easier if Toyota just removed the filter and made the engine oil a sealed system.

I have an engineering degree but more importantly i like cooking with olive oil so i definitely know how oil works. Unfiltered olive oil is the best, you just let the solids settle out and enjoy the best flavor. Motor oil is the same, that's why the oil pan is at the bottom (duh, think about it, why else would it be there). The bits of things fall out of the bottom and by not using the filter you get the best quality motor oil. I’m telling you, I used to use the word incompetent. Now I just call oil filter idiots stupid. I went to a state engineering school. I’m very highly educated. I know oil, I have the best oil...but there is no better oil than unfiltered. Right?

I know that the engineers are able to do this, but they just want to save pennies and require us owners to keep coming back to pay them money for a needless service.

This reminds me of some of the drunk posts I have read lol.

When I am president, we will only use metal oil filter caps and it will be great. TREMENDOUS! They will tell you they are the wrong size but they are idiots, I'll let you figure it out for yourselves, people. Hillary Clinton won't even acknowledge that oil comes from terrorists. She won't even say the word "Metrologist."

I will just use olive oil in my engine next time. It's all the same. Better yet, extra virgin that will make the truck feel like its full of supercharged goodness.

It would be way easier if Toyota just removed the filter and made the engine oil a sealed system.

BMW is well on their way with that - the 335i doesn't have an oil dipstick!

Just so you are aware, if you do have a problem with your engine lubrication system that can be attributed to not using the correct length of oil filter cup stem, your warranty will not help you = S.O.L.

The paragraph above is FACT, not just an opinion.

We are not telling you what to do, just stating that you, as 1engineer said, are stating your opinions.

It's so wonderfully ironic that a metrologist isn't concerned in the least with the measurement in question.
