Yeah, this is probably the case which just means the 4Runner will no longer be a true 4x4 and sales might actually increase. It also means that older 4Runners will be more sought after for people that actually take theirs off road.
Looking through threads in the 4th Gen section it appears the majority of people here don't take them off-road already.

if that is the case, they will drop the 4runner and just boost highlanders.
kinda pointless to compete with the highlander since it has better features all around as a unibody suv/crossover.
and if you start adding all those features and the price starts hitting around 50k, your looking at lexus GX. might as well spend the extra 1-3k for a lexus.
That's just a generic website, likely generated by a bot. I wouldn't really trust what is being given there as any sort of fact. At this point if Toyota was planning any major revisions for 2016 they would have announced at an autoshow by now. The 2016 model will be mostly unchanged from 2015 and should hit showroom floors in a few months. Now is a good time to buy 2015 left overs.
When Nissan changed their Pathfinder to the typical crossover nonsense the 4Runner sales saw an increase. Since it is the last body on frame mid-size SUV it is a bit of a niche market, but every dealership I've talked to says they have no problem selling what is being produced. I doubt that Toyota will be changing the recipe too much in the future, but I would expect the new direct injection 3.5L V6 with ~320hp (or whatever the Tacoma is having next year) to find its way into the 4Runner possibly in 2017 with possibly a new 6-spd auto. That engine seems to be their new go-to for mid-size SUV/trucks so it's a logical fit for the 4Runner. Since it wasn't announced for 2016 yet, and those are hitting showrooms soon, expect it for 2017.
