P2443 - Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve Stuck Closed Bank 2

I guess this is a 50/50 shot that you'll eventually need to replace these. My 2016 4Runner has "23000" miles on it, I started it up in 0F degree weather, took a ride to the gas station, filled up tank 1/2 way, drove around a little.

Next day, CEL, TRAC came on and Multi-terrain light blinking and wont engage. I believe this repair will cost thousands at the dealer. This happens because Toyota is/has defective or design error on the hoses. I hear Toyota released updated hoses to avoid this water leakage into the air injection valves. I never had to dump money into my 4 Runner after 10yrs, this is the first major repair. Going to get an estimate from the dealer to see how many thousands of dollars they want to rob me for.

These are the parts needed to fix this expensive issue. If you need to replace the valve, might as well replace both of them, the pump and hoses.

We have 12' of snow on the way and now i don't have 4WD because of this.

What crap... Have you run into this issue with your 4Runner yet??

If this happened during the Summer months, it's a problem.

If this happened during the zub freezing winter, hold up, it might just unstick itself when temps rise.

I just took a ride to the store, 28F, CEL, TRAC on and Multi-terrain light blinking still. I know these valves have these plastic reeds in them. They stick when frozen. It was 40F yesterday, if valves are iced over it will melt a little or all of it if frozen. Next is to create some sort of "shock" so if there is ice stuck in the reed it will move with some sort of force/bang if ice in reed is not fully melted.

I hit some potholes on purpose to shake the truck/engine. Arrived at my destination all the lights were still on. Parked it in the sun for 15mins.

Got in the 4Runner and started it up, guess what... NO more CEL, TRAC on and Multi-terrain light blinking. All turned off. It's like nothing ever happened. Will see how long the lights stay off, and if they come back during below freezing temps.

I’ve taken them apart and they do not have a plastic reed. They have a spring plate which can break.

This shows a V8 with the air switching valves at the rear, saying you have to remove the intake manifold. That is not the case with the 4.0 V6. The valves are on the side and you do not need to remove the manifold.

I’ve had to replace the secondary air valve of the driver’s side when the spring plate valve broke. Our vehicles live in the West, so we don’t have the moisture problem.

He’s disassembling one from a V8. On the V6 there are two and they are not conjoined.

Maybe there was a plastic reed valve, but I’m not remembering. The spring steel valve plate had broken on mine. They do not sell the individual internal parts, so you can’t rebuild them. You must buy new.

Out west we don’t face the moisture issue, so just replaced the broken valve and never replace the pump. 250K miles later says I did this right.

Usually a cold weather thing. Ice crystals from humidity in the system + frigid weather. Worst case in an urban area find an underground parking garage or any other heated space above freezing, and let things thaw out for 5-6 hours.

I have this issue since 2020, never replaced anything, it corrects itself. If you are bothered by it, there is a bypass kit. It happens when there's a lot of snow and only if i parked outside.
