Looking for opinions. I have always wanted a Landcruiser but for a variety of reasons never pursued one seriously. Now that they aren't available in the US and I now have a neighbor interested in selling his 2016 I am thinking about doing a deal. The 2016 is mint and only has 36K miles. My wife thinks I am crazy. In her mind why would I spend almost $70K for a 6 year old vehicle and get rid of a 2021 with 8500 miles and extended warranty and better gas mileage. Of course this is coming from a lady that drives a 2017 Sequoia Limited that she loves. I retired several years ago and now that I am retired I might put 5K-6K miles on a year so the gas mileage isn't really a big deal to me. Thoughts? I have had a 4Runner since 2001 but always wanted a Landcruiser. As I get older it seems life is getting shorter and friends are passing and I am thinking why not? Any and all opinions appreciated.

If you have the money, why not? It's a crappy buyers' market but people are still buying so you know a LC like that probably won't last long haha. You've put in the work and this seems like a good reward. But don't mind me: I'm in my mid-30's so I know nothing about life haha. Keep us posted.

I have always wanted a Land Cruiser as well, and picked one up for wifey back in October. I work for a dealer and got my 2017 LC with 68k for about $59k with rear DVDs and new tires.
With that being said, I enjoy my 4Runenr more. Could be because its lifted and green, who knows lol.
The LC is great. Even though its a little dated looking, the tech is decent, the ride is excellent, a the quality is great.
You cant really go wrong; should be easy to sell if you dont love it.

I’m on my second 5th gen and I like them, but I’ve also had an 80 series and a 100 series LC. The LC is an entirely different class of vehicle. 70 grand is a lot of money, but the 200 series LC is an absolute unit. If money isn’t an issue, you won’t be disappointed. Unless you’re concerned about mpg.

But another way to look at it… When the 6th gen 4Runner comes out, the 5th Gen will be that rare, coveted, dinosaur of a vehicle that the Landcruiser is now.
The 4Runner has a 5 speed tranny, no timing belt, naturally aspirated V6, no tech bloat. It’s a capable and bullet proof car that is made in Japan. The rumors of the 6th gen are that it may be made in Mexico (chip shortages being the catalyst), and it will not have a rear window that rolls down. It will also be turbo charged. By default the 6th gen will not last as long as a 5th gen.

I would love a land cruiser. I'd seriously consider it if it was a clean vehicle with receipts/maintenance records. No land cruisers up here in canada. only the LX 570 which is like 100 grand lol. I've seen some US imports for sale up here but they were beat up and old
If the LC is clean and money isn't a factor, I would get the LC and never look back. 4R are a dime a dozen compared to the LC. In addition, the the 4R market won't continue to appreciate forever, but the LC might actually especially since the LC is discontinued here in the US.

TBH I'd wait a bit. I already see the prices softening on LC and LX models. My guess is the new Sequoia combined with the high gas prices will bring prices down more. I'd trade for the LC, but it may be worth waiting a bit. I think the pricing run up last year is going to come back down.

If its something you've wanted for awhile and the right situation has presented itself (timing, money, etc) then go for it. Is it a smart decision? Probably not...but if you at a point in your life where you can make this decision and take the financial hit for more enjoyment...then why not...
As much as I would love a LC, I've personally put too much into my 4R to let her go (also helps that a pre-facelift trail edition is a unicorn) but I also know its a material item that can be replaced. With that said, LC have now been discontinued in North America...

Just did the opposite - searched for over a year for a 200-series, post-facelift, and found a one-owner five hours away a couple of years ago. Loved her. Had always wanted a Land Cruiser, and will probably buy an FJ62, FZJ80, or UZJ100 at some point in the future.
The only, and I mean only reasons I traded her on a 2022 4R were resale, warranty, tech, and transmission. The trade offer they gave me was so good, I got a brand-new car and a hefty cheque on top of it. The warranty of a new car (especially given that my other driver is a 1984 AMC Jeep) was too good to pass up. Tech wasn't terrible, but the interface on a 4R is definitely newer, Apple CarPlay, DCM, etc, and it seems like most of the features in LCs will quit working when 3G is discontinued this fall. Transmission... ugh, the only true struggle I had. Coming from a 2002 4Runner, I was used to the A340F, and really like the current A750F: easy, low-tech, bulletproof. The... I believe it's the AC80F, maybe, in the 200-series had a TSB out by the time I'd bought mine in 2020, and despite having the dealership flash the software and recalibrate, I didn't like the gearhunting, the jerky stops and starts, etc. Never really got used to it.

I just want to thank everyone for their opinions and insights. As much as I would like a LC I think I'm going to pass on this one and plan on keeping my 2021 ORP for a while longer. The shortest period of time I have ever kept a 4runner was 6 years. I usually keep my 4Runner's in the 12-15 year ownership time frame and always just buy a new 4Runner. The LC is mint, a neighbor's wife's car, never been driven in the snow (undercarriage looks new), original/one owner, and at 36K miles so driven very little. In addition to always wanting a LC, all of these attributes are what was driving my interest. I agree with another reply that the 5th Gen 4Runner is going to become more in demand if Toyota does make some of the speculated changes to the 6th Gen i.e. 4 cyl. turbo, eliminate the rear sliding window etc. Thanks again for all the replies.
