Why does everyone keep saying they want a car engine in their truck. This and I keep hearing "I hope it has the 2GR-FE".... Yea a Camry engine would be great in a truck.... What this Tacoma really needs is an updated truck engine, but I bet its just going to get the Dual VVTI 1GR-FE we have in our 5th Gen 4runners.

The 2016 still has a plastic bed, rear drums, and I will bet it still has the same old C-Channel Frame (yuck!) I do hope Toyota made some drastic changes to the drivetrain though, but knowing Toyota...

I don't want the exact engine that's in the lexus. They would first need to make some changes, and try to get more power out it. It would be like the 4.6 V8 that's in the LS. Toyota made some changes to it, and you can find it in the Tundra.

and man you should see the detractors. just a vicious cycle, just like when the 2nd gens came out, just like the 2014+ restyle on the 4runners.

as I've said, the warden likes the look, but what sealed the deal was the blue color that is almost like the SWB color of before. as long as shes happy, it makes my choices on toys a lot easier when the time comes to get a new one :wink: :wink: 2017 4runner

I realize liking a redesign on this forum is a bit of a foreign concept but I'll throw my opinion up anyways...I like it! It will take a decent interior and powertrain to seal the deal over the current model but I like. If anything, it looks alittle too much like the Canyon and obviously the front air dam needs to be removed but I think the exterior style is right on and if everything else is on par, I don't see why this won't be at the top again.

The two engines are actually fairly different as the 1UR-FSE in the LS uses the D4S Direct Injection system which requires an overall of most of the intake components, internals, and such. The 1UR-FE in the Sequoia, GX460, and Tundra are of the same family and similar design but lack the D4S system and are very different.

I'm not entirely sure how they could change the 8AR-FTS from the Lexus into a truck engine. Considering that the 2TR-FE in the current Tacoma is a completely different family of engines and are specifically tailored to Truck duty (similar to how the 1UZ-FE in the LS400 was derived from F1 engines and the 2UZ-FE in Toyota's larger Truck & SUVs was specifically designed for low-end torque & Truck use than the somewhat higher revving 1UZ-FE's sportier goals) they'd have to completely redesign the engine in such a way that it wouldn't be part of the AR family of engines (they're FWD I4 Engines used in the Camrys for the most part.) Now an evolved TR engine with Turbo-Charging probably isn't out of the question in this regard, but most likely Toyota wants to see how the 8AR-FTS does before they go full bore on forced induction again (though they have made multiple statements indicating they plan on doing forced induction more in the coming years.)

From looking at the released photos, and spy pics of the test mule, I would be shocked if we see anything groundbreaking...its Toyota after all. It really looks like their "Complete Redesign" will just be slighly more then a mid-gen refresh.

The Cab is the same, the Bed is mostly the same (Plastic) with slightly different outer panels. The front end is new sheet metal.

When looking at the Test Mule:

You can see that it still has rear drums and C-Channel frame. They did add some creature comforts people have been complaining about.

My prediction is that they will keep the same 2.7, and offer our Dual VVTI 1GR-FE. Possibly offer a 6-speed Auto, but I wouldn't be surprised if they carry over 5-speed Auto. It does look like the V6 will have a 6-speed Manual, going by the Mule Pics.

Sadly the only difference between the 2004 Tacomas and 2016s will likely just be some new sheet metal, interior, and some additional creature comforts that should have been included 5 years ago...

so far in a nutshell if you don't want to go over the 12+ thread over on TW, all they have shown is the exterior shots.

interior/underhood wont be revealed until the 12-13 Jan.

I am waiting for the meat & potatoes part as that is the biggest impact on buying the 3rd gen Tacoma.

personally, if its slightly tweaked and mostly carried over, I will still buy it.

the 2015 has everything the warden wants right now, but we held off until the 3rd release hoping for the speedway blue to come back.

Yea that Titan looks BLAH! Looks too much like a F150. I have hopes the XD will sell well so Nissan will put the 2.8 Cummins in the Frontier.

Is this engine from Lexus IS/GS 350? Tuned for truck? I wonder if it will need PREMIUM gas? I am pretty sure no, but i have to wonder.

I believe Toyota only uses the Atkinson Cycle engines in hybrids so this might be some sort of hybrid/possible battery type setup.

As a taller guy (6'1") I am hoping they put the 5th gen 4runner seats in the new Taco. My 4th gen 4R seats are too short length-wise for me and don't really provide that much support, IMO. I can't be the only one who is hoping for a leather option too? I know that sounds lame but my driving time consists of 99.98% highway but I love driving an SUV/Truck.
