2016 tep with kdss hard ride

I had a 2014 SR5 that had a very soft ride even after installing billy 5100's all around with the fronts set at .85. Just replaced it with a 2016 TEP with KDSS and yes I took it for a long test drive, I noticed at that time that it road quite harsh but I attributed the ride to tires aired to 40 lbs but the salesman refused to allow me to lower the tire pressure. My question is this if the KDSS system has too much fluid in it I.E. too much pressure could it make the truck ride very stiff? And yes I have dropped the tire pressure down to 32 lbs as it should be.

What was the air temperature? I've noticed my 2015 TEP with KDSS has a much harsher ride when the temps are below 50 degrees ferheheit or so. It has been this way since I've owned it and I have learned to live with it.

I live in the Pheonix area, actually Surprise AZ and the temp is very seldom less than 50 degrees f and I went to the store today 55 degrees and the truck felt no different. Love the no lean around corners part. And my truck doesn't have the dreaded driver side lean like so many, so I guess I will get used to it or return to the dealer and have it checked, although I dread that more than anything.

To me it's solid, not hard. If you hit a bump quickly it is a bit harsher than the stock suspension I think, but it dampens out immediately so it's just the one "hit". Whereas the stock suspension seemed to "bounce" for a little while. Both have pros and cons. I'll take the better handling and immediate dampening over the softer suspension, but I could definitely see how others would prefer non-KDSS.

Good stiff ride

I bought my 2016 TE with KDSS in late November. I moved up from a Subaru Forester so not really a good comp but I would call the ride stiff. My wife says it rides more like a truck... I have had this vehicle tight in the turns and really like the way the KDSS handles (I was actually going way too fast on an off ramp the first time - and was pleasantly surprised at the result). I changed the tires out right away and have enjoyed the ride and handling of the BFG K02s

So much misinformation here...

Volume of fluid does not equate to too much pressure.

KDSS uses synthetic fluid. Temperature does not matter.

KDSS does not change above 12 mph. It is fully extended.

KDSS equipped vehicles will always have a bit firmer handling on road than SR5. Also it's new. Give it a month.

Dealer speak: "It's normal"

With KDSS we effectively have a stiffer swayer than the Sr5 which is great for keeping the truck flatter in corners.

It will effect ride when a single tire hits a bump. When this happens the thicker swaybar effectively increases the spring rate as that tire reacts to the bump. If both tires on a given axle hit the same bump @ the same time, it (a stiffer sway) has no effect on ride.

Hope that makes sense.

If I remember right, the TEP 4Runners come with XREAS as well as optional KDSS. Both those are more "performance" oriented and as such you'll have a bit of a stiffer ride compared to your SR5.

Everyone that's ridden in my TEP has at some point or another brought up that for a truck (it's body on frame after all) it rides incredibly well. It's no '77 Cadillac nor is it the family truckster. I only noticed a jarring ride when the road I'm on dictates that a ride should be rough. It's definitely stiffer through the corners and has less of that uncertain feeling when going through the twisties.

How soft or hard the vehicle rides can often be subjective. For some this vehicle could be the softest ride they've had in a vehicle and for others the hardest. Just depends on what you're accustomed to and what you're willing to adjust to.

I'll repeat the above mentioned harsher ride on single tire bumps with KDSS.

Personally got used to it, but for OP's case you could drop the tire pressure down to lowest safe rating and it should help smoothen out the ride.

Try 15psi on ko2s offroad and you'll know how much of an impact it makes!

..... but the salesman refused to allow me to lower the tire pressure..

This is where the CUSTOMER says "take this back to the service dept and get the tires to the proper psi, or we have no test drive or anything else". Unbelievable what ppl will put up with.

IMO, that attitude is a precursor of how you'll be treated later.

"If I remember right, the TEP 4Runners come with XREAS"

According to the 2016 brochure, only on the Limited.

I have to say I've been very pleasantly surprised, and very pleased, with the ride and handling of the TEP after 7 years of driving a 2010 Highlander Limited 4wd. I'd buy the KDSS again without hesitation. I haven't tried the tires at 40 psi and probably won't. I can't imagine why a dealer would have them that high.

I do miss the zippier acceleration of the Highlander (it's pretty much just a heavy Camry after all) and the JBL system, but my girlfriend's 2016 Avalon Touring is in the driveway if I'm in a hurry.
