2018 4runner hard braking

I am not new to owning a Toyota truck. Before my 18 4runner I owned a 08 Toyota FJ Cruiser for over 10 years and over 192k miles on it. It just feels that you need to really press on the brake pedal to stop she then it nose dive to a stop.

Am I just crazy or it's just the way the 4runner stops? It would be great to see how some other 18 4runner stops compares to mine.

that's normal.

You will get use to it, but panic breaking in the 4runner still scares the crap out of me of how hard the brakes bite, but it works really well.
 
It does it's job quite well but I agree that it's too much at times. It can almost feel like you're going to have a wreck instead of avoiding one haha. I think they need to work on that in the next gen of vehicles.
 
Mine has surprised me a few times with how hard it brakes.
Bilstein 5100s help the nose dive.

We have a new Sienna and after a few hard stops, I wish it did as well as the 4Runner. It feels like too much pressure and not enough stop compared the the T4.
 
Twice the extra grab has surprised me. Once was in the snow stopping for a light and the second time was towing a light landscape trailer with a vibrator plate in the back (light load) also stopping for a light. Lots of tire screeching/abs when it was absolutely not necessary.

Yes I will be adding 5100 to my 4runner this fall. Had them on my FJ and it helped with the nose dive. I am going to put them on 2nd notch (0.85") with a 3/8" spacer on the drives side and 1/4" spacer on the passenger side. This will fix the driver side lean and get around 1.3" of lift upfront.

My 2012 FJ Cruiser also stopped like that if you pressed too hard and rapidly on the brakes. Scared the crap out of me the first time it did it. Now I know better.

Personally I think the 5100's are far too stiff but that's just me.

My 08 FJ that I owned since new was easier on the pedal to stop her. Switching over to 18 4runner was way different, that is what I noticed.
 
I have a 17, does the same thing. Nosedive is fixed with new suspension but not the soft start hard finish grabby brakes. My biggest complaint in the 4Runner. Engineers really screwed up on the brakes. Not sure if the late cycle refresh did anything about this in the 2020s. Doubt it.

I'm at 180,000 miles and I just put my 3rd set of pads on Saturday. They had plenty of meat left on them, once again the OEM pads do not disappoint!!!

I changed first set at 100k and replaced rotors because I was afraid they were worn from running pads so long. Pads had meat left at 100k.

So, to answer your question, depending on your driving habits, you could easily get 70-100k out of the OEM fronts. Rears will last longer.

That is seriously impressive. That can't be typical pad life though, right? RIGHT?haha

I agree. I’ve locked up and had some fun tire noise a few times by accident.

It is, i shit you not, if you read through the forum you'll get similar stories on OEM pads. I don't do much modding so I keep everything OEM, except my oils and tires. My original shocks lasted 160k, I replaced with OEM for a fraction of the cost of the 5100's I considered.

I've been driving my runner since new in 2012. The only times I have had nose dive is when I wasn't paying attention to traffic or something ran out in front of me, maybe 5 or 6 times in 180k miles. You really have to hit the brakes quick and hard to get the nose dive. Otherwise, normal attentive driving only requires easy braking which it does very well. The runner always stopped perfectly and the ABS worked great. Only issue is all the crap laying on the inside ends up in the floorboards. Not the trucks fault for stopping like it is supposed to.

That will help a ton. I put 5100’s on mine set at .85 and it made a huge difference, no more nose dive.
