The whole point of the 4runner is to be basic and low tech.... People keep wanting all this extra technology and shit that will break. The reason 4 runners keep running and running is that they are basic with small amounts of breakable items.

Regarding safety features, he may be referring to things such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruiser control etc. I agree with the OP that I wouldn't mind having these features, nearly every car manufacturer offers them. The 3rd gen Tacoma has them so I'm guessing the 6th gen 4Runner will too. It does bother me though that the GX460 gets them and we don't. It's demonstrably reliable there so they should carry it over.
For what it's worth these safety features are not available on the current wrangler either. Considering the JK Rubicons have a tendency to just shut down on the freeway for no reason at all I'm not sure how much it'd help though :lmao:

We just got a '17 SE Highlander for the wife, and honestly I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. Headliner mounted AC vents for the kids in the back, key fob opens doors when you touch the door handles, push button start, large touch screen, radar controlled cruise control, vehicle detection when backing up, seats are way more comfortable...I could go on but I won't. When I go back to driving the 4R, I would sum it up with yes, it feels dated and simple.

Sorry.........I'm from the KISS crowd. I HATE the crap and complexity the Government has mandated. I don't want ANY of it. I like electric window and door locks, cruise, power brakes and steering etc. I don't need all the electronic Nanny crap, and I don't want to pay for it or fix it. There is the Overloaded LC and Sequoia for all that junk!:uzi:
Those safety sensors would need a shut off switch or your truck would be going ballistic going through grass and rocky terrain. Personally, I hate that stuff. Push button start and a better remote start system would be greatly appreciated though.

That's a good point. Just so it's clear I'm not advocating all of these systems, but that it'd be nice to have the option. When I had my 2016 Tacoma I never noticed the blind spot or rear cross traffic triggering when offroad, maybe it's disconnected in low range but I'd have to check. I'm pretty sure it's all gonna be standard soon so it'll be interesting to see what happens.
I personally could care less about adaptive cruise control/front crash avoidance and all that stuff, but I found the blind spot monitors and rear cross traffic alert on the Tacoma really helpful, especially when carrying a load blocking the view over your shoulder.. I basically see it as another tool in the toolbox that are not to be relied upon entirely, much in the same way as the rear view camera.

They aren't a luxury vehicle. If you want all of that extra crap, you bought the wrong vehicle. Go buy a BMW, Audi or Mercedes Benz if you want over-engineered, over-electrically-loaded crap.
Speaking from a service advisor/technician stand point, the less it's equipped with, the better off. Less breakage. Less mess. Less $ out of pocket for repair/replacement. I purposely ordered mine without a SUNROOF, because I didn't want the issues. When that crap breaks, wallets cry.

This. Exactly this. Especially those rear A/C vents. Those with kids ( or anyone who has had to sit in the backseat in the summer in Texas) know how valuable those things are. I have a '16 Limited (4Runner) and am truly jealous of the extras the Highlander has.

We just got one for my wife. Yeah, it has all kinds of cool stuff but it's missing one thing: A soul. That has to be the most boring thing to drive and ride ever. I get in my new Tacoma TRD Sport six speed with no tech package and I am immediately driving. I shift, I check mirrors, I adjust temperatures, I turn on and off lights... i drive. I drive the wife's Highlander.... no soul man. I get to push the brake and gas and steer... unless I am not paying attention and then it does it for me.
Guys, there is no in between. If you add all that stuff to the 4Runner then, while you gain all that stuff, you also lose the intangibles, the experience of driving what the 4Runner is.
I think eventually every vehicle will be soulless. You get in, tell it where you want to go and it takes you there. It will then be simply an appliance. The vehicles now are in transition on their way to that point. If that's what you want, great. It sure isn't what I want. I have truly enjoyed driving since I was 15 and that was 40 years ago. My question: Why not just buy a Highlander for yourself if you want all that stuff? As soon as you add it to the 4Runner then the 4Runner will cease to be what it is. It will lose some of the identity it has now. This is one main reason why i bought a Tacoma instead of a Landcruiser, which is what I went to look at to begin with lol.

Give me my '78 Bronco back.
Give me my '89 Silverado, even my '99 back.
Give me my '00 Wrangler soft top back,
Keep my newer '04 Silverado HD, 14 F-150 ecobUst, Honda Odysey, '08 Trailblazer and anything that had technology "efforts" that just broke down so fast that financing was not even completed before a new ride was needed.
Ideally, one of these manufactures will get it right and sell us something that has what we NEED and stop pumping them full of their overpriced tech and "features" and gadgets that are stock that most of us will NEVER take the time to learn how to use and keep the price reasonable while other brands keep hiding the worlds inflation rates behind "added features" that take the ability to work on our own vehicles further away from our own hands.... oh wait... that is the TOYOTA 4Runner. C&D had it right, a dinosaur still roams the earth, and i am damn proud to own one.
$40k+ may seem steep for a new vehicle these days but if you all want all those other options go ahead and fork out the extra $10-25k they are charging for $1-2k worth of actual material cost that in the long run will just invite more gremlins into your rides costing you even more in the future buying sooner than later... all the while we should be 200,000 miles further down the road in our paid off vehicles.... that's my plan and my .02 cents anyway
