2019/2020 Pro Roof Rack To SR5/Off-road Roof Rack

I’ll be picking up my 2020 Pro this weekend. Hoping it’ll fit in the garage, but if it doesn’t, will swap out to the black OEM roof rack.

Does anyone who has personally done this care to do a simple write up. Any tips will be appreciated. Sealant used etc.

Also, do you have a material list of what to pick up and what is needed to reuse. I picked up a front bumper from Toyota in the past for my truck. Went home, removed old one, only to find out they gave me the wrong part.

I’d much rather have my own list that I can cross reference with what they give me if I need to swap out the rack.

I just had the dealer swap mine out. Got the parts from a shop who upgraded a customer to a Prinsu, so don't have the part numbers. Got two side rails, 8 bolts and washers. No idea if they used sealant or anything else...supposedly a simple procedure, just be careful that the nuts in the roof don't come off.
I wouldn't fit in my work parkade with the Pro one, so had to be done ASAP.

Does anyone like that roof rack on the TRD Pro? Seems like it wouldn't be very functional unless you just wanted to put a couple of suitcases up there and strap them down.

Here is a video on how to take them off, you should be able to figure out how to put them on based on this even though he is taking them off.

I'm OK with mine. Probably in the minority in that I find the aesthetics to be positive. You're correct that it isn't very functional. The weight limits are pretty low, the overall sq ft is small, and because it sits so high adding things like kayak carriers becomes absurd.

Pro rack looks decent with a ski box on it, I would have kept it if I didnt have height restrictions to worry about.

I would rather the roof rails my 17 Pro has. I will probably be removing mine and selling it. I’m trying to find the black roof rails but not seeing them for sale on line anywhere. I don’t see it being useful.

The one guy on here pulled his off and removed the top tier. It looks A LOT better and seems much more functional as well.

OK. I found someone with black rails and he wants my Pro rack so I'm going to trade him straight up. Win/Win for both of us. It looks like an easy swap. Did everyone that did the rails put silicone on the white posts like everyone with aftermarkets racks have??

Loaded question not sure anyone has best answer.
I searched multiple forums and seams silicone is acidic and after time could cause issues. Also it hardens after time and not best choice. I read multiple times butyl rubber is best, never dries, good bond, vibration resistant.
I tried it on my pro to stock rails and the stock rail sits flush to the roof around the white tubes. I pulled it after a few car washes and found it held the moisture even under the butyl. Tried 3m 4200 urethane for a week and it never hardens and is not acidic, can be used under water. Pulled after a week and again stock rails squeezed it out and again had moisture around the tube under the 4200! I'm going to order a new rail end as the factory does not use sealant other than a butyl type gasket that comes fixed to the rail ends.
Short version is I'm fed up and should have just used silicone as I usually don't keep vehicles that long. I just don't like jacking people down the road and want it to be right

There is a big post on this. I removed mine and just take your time removing the bolts. I used clear car sealant around the holes. Go slow backing out the bolts because of the lock tite.

and jump to post#37 within it for instructions. no need for any additional sealant etc. just make sure to use the OEM rubber washers or equivalent.

Thanks for the info, I read post 37 and not sure I caught it? here you say use factory washer. did you use the metal double hole washer/bracket from the pro?
The black rails I bought had no washer as it was worn off

it depends on what rack you are putting on after removing the pro rack.


- if you are using an after market rack, then use what the rack comes with

- if you are using a 2010-2013 Trail Edition rack then you will need to use the metal-double-hole-bracket before you put the rack on, and then use the rubber factory washers in-between the rack and the bolt.

- if you are using a non-Pro and non-2010-2013-Trail rack (which mean the standard silver, chrome, or the black 5th gen rails), then you do NOT use the metal-double-hole-bracket (that you found under the Pro tack) before you put the replacement rack on, but still use the rubber factory washers in-between the rack and the bolt.

BTW if the factory rubber washers are worn off like you said, then buy equivalent ones from a local hardware store. - or- you can buy a Toyota hardware kit that comes with bolts and the washers.

I know I'm just swapping my Pro rack for his 2020 Off Road with black rails. I would think the swap would be easy.

Thanks, I went from pro rack to stock 2019 black rails. They do not sell a washer as the mounting bracket comes with a butyl type gasket attached, brackets cost I think 60 each wholesale. I imagine could have a thin butyl gasket made but I tried it myself and when tightening the rail down it.squished out the sides and did not seal

This thread has been useful as I’m thinking about adding a TRD Pro roof rack, primarily because I haven’t heard of any leaking issues like those with non-OEM racks. Just wanted to make I didn’t miss anything. Has anyone had or heard of any leaking issues when using the OEM rubber washers on the TRD Pro rack?
