Add factory e-locker from Offroad or Pro to 2016 4Runner SR5?

Hi folks,
With the 2016 SR5 I purchased (due to 3rd row), I'm finding in my offroad adventures that I would like to have a rear e-locker. I know later models (TRD Offroad, and TRD Pro I believe) had this option, and I was wondering what year and model of rear differential setup I need to look for from a junkyard? I take it Tacoma rear differentials are not suitable for a 4Runner?

Is the main wiring for a future locker already in the body harness (to the console, down and out towards rear axle), so that I would just need to install the factory switch in the overhead console and hook up the locker harness to the undercarriage harness, or what else would need to be done, if anyone has done it?

Lastly, in searching various junkyards, there seems to be an option of rear diffs that have (or don't have) a hydraulic stabilizer bar - does this matter if I'm going to reuse my SR5 swaybar and just swap out the rear axle assembly? I take it that the "hydraulic stabilizer bar" is the what the junkyard means by a rig with the KDSS system.

That does'nt look easy to me :bounce:

its definitely not. I haven't done it. if you think about the cost of the parts now and any hired labour to help you, it's almost worth trading the vehicle for one with a locker if you really need one. ATRAC isn't bad but if you are finding you need one to get through the trails you want to do it might be almost easier to swap the vehicle

You do not need to trade it in, it is not that difficult, me personally I would take the third member out then bring it in to a gear shop and have them do the install, but I know plenty of guys that have regeared and did all the work themselves and said its not that bad. If you take it in and get everything done, then yes it can be expensive,. But realistically getting the third member out is not that difficult, I have done it on multiple vehicles and it takes about an hour or 2. Either way even if you can find a one in a junkyard, which I bet will be next to impossible, you can just do a third member swap if you find one, then take care of the wiring which should be the easy part of doing it all.

I wrote that article, it's not as hard as it looks. You just need to follow my guide step by step and make sure you have a decent dial indicator.

Just curious, do you use ATRAC in your offroading? Lots of people have gone considerable places on ATRAC.

ATRAC is a great system but it will only get you so far. When you get into really technical situations having a locker gives you more control. ATRAC is like a bucking bronco that can get you in trouble in tippy situations. That is why I eventually gave up and installed an elocker!
