You guys ever have perverse thoughts about a vehicle from another brand and feel like its cheating on our beloved Toyota?

I do.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 05 and have really been considering selling my fleet to get a 5th gen but...

270hp and 310ft-lb straight 4. I have a boat and love to do wood working so the thought of a midsize intrigues me. Couple in that TFL Truck took a Ranger head to head against a TRD Off Road Tacoma, and it did everything the Tacoma could do...kind of gives me a wandering eye.

The biggest thing that holds me back is, damn my T4R has been good to me. The reliability of Toyota is just astounding. And sure, I dont really need a SUV like the T4R but I have a Mustang that I've put maybe 200 miles on in the years since I bought my Runner, so it goes to show what I like driving more.

But dang if the Ranger isn't a temptress, trying to get me to cheat on Toyota.

I haven’t don’t a ton of research on the new mid-size segment trucks, but the Colorado ZR2 did peak my interest and I like it more than the current Tacoma too. The Ranger Raptor which isn’t coming to the states also got my attention, but I still like my 4Runner / SUV more than trucks for my general daily driver and recreational use…

I own a 1500 Silverado Z71 too, it’s kind of my “work truck”, I keep it around for the times I need a truck bed or for tow, but I rarely drive the thing. When it comes to doing “truck stuff” I need the bed capacity and find even the capacity of the compact trucks pretty dismal.

If you want a truck to use as a workhorse, get a full size 2WD for cheap, and keep the 4Runner because it really is that great.
 
Recommend waiting a bit. Toyota released the official 2020 Tacoma teaser today.

The new Tacoma is based on a 2005 platform. It still doesn't have a boxed frame. But great news it still retains the rear drum brakes!
 
Question...wouldn't a boxed frame be more likely to rust away in some areas...it it could more likely trap moisture, dirt, salt, etc.?

Also, if having a boxed frame is the 'thing'...why don't big trucks (semis, box trucks, etc.) have them?

But then again, Tacoma just recently named HIGHEST resale value of ANY vehicle, bar none. Tough to be critical of that.

Meh, it's true no doubt. But I think it's based off of a past reputation. I've been reading and hearing so many problems with these things. Hardly inline with that "Toyota quality" we've all heard about. They really have some audacity to retain those rear drums. The c-channel frame is sufficient, but when most(all?) competitors utilize a box frame, and they build a similar sized truck overseas with one, I have to give a serious WTF at that price point. Waiting for the day that Toyota deems a c-channel acceptable for the 4Runner as well. Did anyone notice Toyota retained the same cab for this "3rd gen". I'm against the idea of bigger is better for redesigns, but this is blatant cost cutting.

I do think these TRD Pros are really attractive. But that also means that I think they are doing a better job with marketing than with the actual truck. But I can't hate too much, it's working!
 
Read the motor trend article. Wouldn't write it off as trash. If Toyota decided to bring the overseas Hilux here to replace a Taco, people may have similar comments regarding ride and refinement. I can appreciate the foreign simplicity that used to be the norm for pickup trucks here. Only downside is that it is still way too expensive when compared to an F150. Such is the US truck market I guess..

Man, this is the truth. I understand inflation and all that, but an extended cab F150 4wd can easily be $50k. That's with cloth seats too.
 
One thing I will say, and this is opinion more than fact, but one reason I do lean more towards toyota than anyone else is because I feel like they are the most true to themselves over any other brand. They don't really try crazy gimmicks, they just go with what they know because they know it works.

Now the new tacoma does leave that up for debate to an extent. Technically what they did should work, but it has its issues. Which is one thing I do love about the 4runner. That is, its had the same displacement motor since 2003, so obviously it's a motor that performs as it should.

All good points...drum brakes, manual seats, C-frame...all points that i have criticized about in past...but yet, you have one of the best selling vehicle with the best resale value.

Are you going to tell me that if i go on a Chevy or Ford forum that i won’t see any issues?

We all know how reliable 4runners are...yet, this forum is littered with complaints. Does that mean that 4runners are unreliable or cost cutting POS? Have you seen crash test result of the 4runner?!!! How about lack of safety features?

A quick look on Colorado forum is littered with major complaints about seats, AC leaking, engine stalling, transmission issues, etc..

Here is one: New transmission fix - Chevy Colorado & GMC Canyon

“Have 2017 Cajun Red Colorado-just loved it, until the shudder started at 1900 miles. Have had it at the dealership 5 times, 2 new torque converters, 2 different flushes, AND had the brand new fluid put in on 1/24/19. Supposed to drive it 500 miles, but now it has engine check light on. Only has 14,000 miles on it, bought in Dec. 2017...”

Apparently, transmission & torque converter problems are so prevalent that GM is no longer replacing them...just changing out the fluid and then you just wait until it fails. LOL

Yeah, just wait till Ford Ranger reaches customers hands in the masses...based on what my brother is going thru with his POS 2018 Ford Raptor, it is gonna be fun to watch!

Yeah, reading Colorado forums, all of a sudden, Tacoma’s shortcomings sure don’t look too bad....
