2019 off road premium Alexa entune update

I was driving this evening to pick up dinner and my Entune head unit said it had a mandatory update. I clicked update and install and didn’t notice anything. I clicked on the entune phone app and found an Alexa icon. I went back out to the truck and found there is an Alexa in the new software. I linked to my amazon account and now I have all Alexa functionality for my garage door, thermostat, door locks and music. I searched and didn’t see anyone else post about it.

Just did the update too, took some time to download and install but nice to have!

Wish carplay could be added like this...

Thanks, will look for the update.... how long did the update take to complete?

Alexa was already linked through the Entune Apps. They probably fired the Entune team for creating such garbage. I hate hate hate when they change the behavior of the SW. Also no instructions, introduction, what's new, etc just go figure it out. WTF, it's incomplete.

It's related to this.
Etune SW App update

I finally did the update without my phone in the car. It took like a minute, did something and didn't explain anything. It didn't look like you screen shot, just took out the Entune stuff. For some reason it won't work unless I open the both the Toyota and Toyota+Alexa app (iphone)

They probably did a deal with Google. When that contract runs out they push a mandatory update for some odd ball SW that doesn't work.

The 2020 have cellular modems, does Alex work without your phone in the car? If so that might be a security risk, because someone can easily boot the head unit and talk to Alexa.

Toyota SW sucks, the should fire the SW Product Manager. :mad2:

It doesn’t work without the phone and app running and linked to the vehicle from my minimal testing.

Yeah, it’s not super easy to use. You have to open Alexa on the head unit and then physically open the Entune app. Once you do that, it works ok to select Amazon music channels. Mine kept freezing up from time to time. I find it easier just to open Pandora on my phone and select Bluetooth when I want music. I can skip songs with the steering wheel controls.

I have slacker/LiveXLive subscription and use it on the entune daily. Streams smooth, clear, and seems to have more volume than streaming it from the phone via Bluetooth. All wheel controls function this way as well.

“Hey Siri” works really well through my iPhone 11 Pro when connected through bluetooth in my ‘14 for any of the usual commands I could bark like playing music and controlling garage doors/lights/text messages.

This sounds like the typical auto manufacturer solution: years behind, less stable, and more cumbersome.

If you have the always listening /'Hands free' on, which uses your phone, then you can literally just say "alexa" and as long as your phone can hear you it works...
nothing simpler.

Where did you see this?

I opened a request for them to explain what the update was attempting to do and got the following response via email. Of course they didn't' answer the question.

Dear Mr. XXXX,

Thank you for taking time to contact Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and we appreciate the opportunity to confirm the multimedia features in your new 2020 Toyota 4Runner.

We have moved away from the Entune™ branding. To properly activate your Toyota Owner’s account and Connected Services features (i.e. Remote Connect), it must be done through the Toyota app. Please follow the steps below to activate your account:

Step 1: Download Toyota app by searching the word ‘Toyota’ in your app or play store. Apple Store: Toyota app; Google Play Store: Toyota app
Step 2: Sign in to Toyota app using your email address. If you already have a Toyota Owners account, please use the same credentials.
Step 3: Check your email for activation code *Please check your SPAM folder if you do not see the code within your regular email inbox
Step 4: Input activation code into Toyota app.

For first time users, after entering your 6-digit activation code, you will be prompted to enter a password. If needed, there is a password reset link that can be utilized. Again, please be sure you are using the Toyota App and not the Toyota Owners app or Remote Connect app.

If you have any further concerns logging into the Toyota app, feel free to contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at (800) 331-4331. Our hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central Time Monday through Friday and 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time on Saturdays.

Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters.

Sincerely,

Daniell T.

I'm not sure what the Toyota App does. I think it's a BT bridge to the head unit, but they aren't clear about that.

So I bought a car with Entune and they decided to change the controls and outsource the whole thing to Amazon (Alexa) which requires me to have an Amazon account. Now Amazon knows everything about my car too? WTF??

There is an Amazon sales guys getting paid a hefty commission on that one.

It's all very smoke and mirrors as to what they do and it's scary that they have that much control over our lives.

I'm probably going to delete all that stuff an just use BT streaming or Carplay.

Nope.
Wrong on literally all fronts.

You don't even have to turn on Alexa, you loose no functionality by not turning it on... it's only a feature that they added.

Don't use it if you don't like it.

Amazon (which you called Google in your earlier post) has literally nothing to do with the User Interface on the Entune system.

As I just stated its an APP on the Entune system, much like YELP is an App.
