2019 Tacoma TRD PRO

Hey all,

Been thinking of this truck lately. I would love to get 4runner TRD PRO but it has no safety stuff (Adaptive Cruise, Pre-Collision, Blindspot, etc.). I understand that some of you are not into this...but I NEED it. (So, please no lecture on the good old days.)

Yes, i know that it has drum brakes...damn Toyota! The snorkel (aka desert air extension) is gimmick, but hey it’s optional.

My brother was talking to a local trusted mechanic and they highly recommend the Tacoma...hopefully not because they see them often! LOL

The backseat is less than ideal for 3 kids...but i still have my minivan for that.

Anyone have comments on 2019 Tacoma TRD PRO?? I am NOT close to buying one...just getting a feeler while i do more research into it.

I'd buy one if I had a want for a truck again.

My Tundra was just to big for my needs. But I would get rid of that big ass TRD Pro emblem. Thats also too big for my liking.
 
Biggest complaints I've seen are questionable drivetrain behavior/performance and surprisingly low roof line for anyone over 6ft and strange seating position.

Could maybe cross shop with the new Ford Ranger as it's got more bells and whistles than you could come up with on your own and is a pretty good looking truck and lots of initial reviews praise the drivetrain pretty highly.

If I could justify needing a truck bed, I'd probably go towards the Ranger over the Tacoma just for those reasons alone, even if reputation isn't established yet.

Sorry, no Ford. My brother’s 2018 Raptor is a nightmare! Over past few months, he has not gone thru one full tank of gas without visiting dealer! Electronic AND mechanical issues!

No Chevy either...my other brother’s Chevy Cruze has been a lemon since day one.

3.5 & 6 Speed

From what I heard always hunting for gears. My friend has a 17 Sport and he said he doesn't notice it hunting for gears. I've never driven one.

Here are some uneducated comments.

I’ve never owned a pickup and have rarely used one.
Pickups can be extremely useful to those who use them.
Do you ultimately want a 4Runner TRD Pro?
Do you physically (or for some other reason) NEED the features you mention?
Are you willing or able to buy the Tacoma that fits your needs while waiting to see if Toyota adds those features to the 4Runner?
Can you afford to buy the Tacoma that fits your needs now, then take the financial hit (maybe none?) of selling or trading it on the 4Runner you want?

Well, a truck is not a bad thing because i like to take my family on bike trails...and having a empty bed to put the bikes in vs. hitch bike rack (on my minivan).

NEED: safety techs. Definitely. I will not buy another car without blind-spot...and i drive at night often enough that Pre-Collision and Adaptive cruise are a must have.

Those features won’t be on 4runner until next redesign...whenever that is. Again, i would have to deal with bike racks on hitch.

Well, if i get Tacoma, then no 4runner in the foreseeable future.
 
I know this is considered heresy, but the Colorado/Canyon twins are much better mid-sized trucks compared to the Taco. A 308 HP 3.6L V6 engine with an 8 speed auto that shifts seamlessly, and rear disc brakes. City driving is around 17 mpg, IDK about highway mpg offhand. Unfortunately they don't have the electronic safety features you want (well maybe the 2019 does).

The Chevy Cruze in general is a lemon straight from the factory. The engine is trash. Never should’ve been produced and sold. I’d tell your brother to cut his losses and get away from it. But the GM trucks, at least the full-size ones, are fine. They’re fairly simple and pretty reliable.
 
My friend has a 2018 TRD off road Tacoma. He loves it, but does get frustrated with the 3.5 and power train. On cold mornings, he has to let it run for a few minutes to wake it up before heading out on the road. Dead peddal is also a known Toyota issue.

Ok, so it seems like the safety tech is of primary importance to you. If you’re unable to wait, then I suggest you get a vehicle that is equipped as you need. If you want a TRD PRO 4Runner and can wait to see if they add the tech you’re after, then wait and see. Nobody knows your budget and your requirements like you do. Personally, I was fortunate enough to be able to choose the 4Runner that I wanted.

Well...to get 4Runner with those tech, I could get GX460. :(
