2020 4Runner Configurator Issues

The configurator experience: has it always been a fountain of frustration?

I'm trying to configure a 2020 ORP w/KDSS, moonroof, and slide-out cargo deck in Barcelona Red. No running boards.

The available configurations are ORP w/KDSS +
1. running boards (+$1350)
2. nothing (+$1750) Wait, what? Cheaper to get running boards than to not get them?
3. running boards and moonroof ($1975)

Seems like too often the configurator will frustrate for dubious reasons. Want a moonroof? You must choose a different color! What?

Help me out, configurator graybeards! I'm clearly doing something wrong.

Seems you can only select one package, If I added sliding cargo I can't select KDSS with Options.

Exactly...if I add KDSS then it automatically removes the sunroof or anything else. Click on sunroof, it deletes KDSS...

So, my ORP MGM w/KDSS, sunroof, predator steps and Pro wheels, based on the configuration page, is impossible...even though that's what I ordered from my dealer...

Sweet Jesus, Toyota...figure it out...

I cannot get your $1630 version of KDSS with options: mine shows KDSS with options to be a $1345 add-on for running boards. They really want me to get the running boards I don't want.

The configurator isn't universal, it's regional - you see different options depending on your zip code.

Maybe in your area? I was able to put those together

The irony, or idiocy, is that I can build a 2019 that way, but not a 2020. Not sure why, aside from region, that would change and if it's because of my region, then maybe I can get one from another region they way I wanted it.

Oddly, though, when I built it at the dealership a few months back, all of the options were available for the Kansas City Region.

Maybe I'll just ket a Kia instead...:heh:

If the configurator can’t put together a vehicle that your dealer can get you, it’s really not configurating all that well.

Configurator is hilariously worthless.

Want a moonroof? Then you can't have a sliding cargo deck. Pick only one.

Want KDSS+moonroof+running boards? No problem. For any color other than Barcelona Red.

I suppose its real purpose is to force you into the dealership so that their salespeople can work their salesforce magic on you. That's all they really want.

In which case, I suppose the design is brilliant.

Very true. For instance, in my region, we get the 'Keep it wild savings'. But regardless, the configurator is definitely bugging out

Here is an email exchange with an Toyota Internet Sales specialist.

ME:
Quick question:

I noticed that when trying to config a 2020 TRD Premium with KDSS, moonroof and sliding cargo deck it is not available. There is an option for the KDSS and moonroof but I can’t add the sliding cargo deck. I am hoping it is just the online configuration tool (see attached)

Is this combo possible?

Thanks for any info you may provide.

Dealer:
Good morning sir how's it going today? I did some research for you regarding the configuration you're looking for. It would appear that the tray will not be an option in the 2020 4Runner. Was the Tray a must to have in the 4Runner?

Whenever I have played with the configurator, it seems to only "configure" things that are sitting on a lot in my region. Certain colors or color combinations show up as "out of stock" if you try to choose them, or certain option selections limit the choice of color. The configurator, at least when I enter my zip code, really seems to be more of a "search stock" feature.

Give up on the configurator and go sit down with a fleet/internet manager.

Some regions are too restrictive, but when I ordered mine in SoCal, the rep was easy to work with and gave me choices. Let me know if you want contact info. I may be able to get a Toyota shirt from him if you buy.

What, then, is the purpose of the configurator? Corporate could easily disconnect it. When you click on a model, the message pops up: “Now drive on over to to the dealership and have a nice sit down with a salesperson.”

Corporate made a different decision but didn’t follow through very well. Creates an unprofessional look and feel to the brand. Not sure that’s the aspiration.

It only shows what is on the ground or enroute within the sales region. For some reason some regions never get some packages. I don't know if that is regional ordering driven by by sales data or what.

A dealer is married to the region. They cannot see or access anything beyond their region.

If want a specific package in a specific color then you have move the built-it tool around different regions until you find what you want then contact a dealer in that region. Once you've found the region, don't waste your time trying to find what dealer it is at because some dealers web sites really suck. Get a burner phone number from google voice and create a burner email. Find a cost-plus dealer and either ship it or fly out and make a road trip.

It's an odd way to sell vehicles but it's Toyota's way. Always has been. Back when I bought my '85, if you wanted the sun-roof you had to take the fancy stereo that had a cassette player. The damned thing was a $130 option.

Oh, there is the package that you are looking for in the Denver region.

Interesting. So I’m in San Diego, do you believe that the configurator will eventually show the options that I want? Also, could the dealer order me one now even if it can’t be configured online?

Thanks

Seems it would be best to lay off the configurator until October.
