If I wanted a Land Rover I would spend less and buy an old defender, that way it will be easier to work on when stuff inevitably breaks

My most recent LR experience was driving around Germany in a RR Evoque - which is a Ford Focus based Range Rover (even the engine still says Ford on it). The ride was nice. The front bumper fell off on the highway for the owner shortly after purchase - the entire front plastic set literally fell completely off. None of the electronic driving aids worked by 50k miles. The interior is very IKEA style - minimalist and hard seats with very little padding. For me it would be a hard pass on that particular vehicle. My friend who owns it traded it shortly after for a Cayenne. Top to bottom a better vehicle.
Without seeing the new discovery up close it's hard to know much about it.
From the specs - tow rating is a complete joke. 8,000 lbs tow rating with a 2.0 turbo??? Surely they must be kidding. It's already heavier than a 4Runner and just as under powered. The engine is not even remotely up to the task of hauling around a 6,000lb car and an 8,000lb trailer. I'm sure the 6cyl is a bit better - but even then, it's pretty damn small. I'd say there's no possible way that's an SAE tow rating.
Otherwise it looks much more of a Jeep Cherokee/ GC competitor than a 4Runner. It's a unibody crossover SUV with "off road" styling. Much like a Rav-4 Adventure, Jeep GC, VW Toureg, etc. It's probably the right vehicle for a lot of Fauxverlanders. I'm sure it'll be great with a RTT touring around Yosemite and Yellowstone. Probably better than a 4Runner for the task most people actually use them for. If the reliability is there.... which we all know has always been the issue with Land Rover products. You'll never see one out on the trails. I've literally never once actually crossed paths with a Land Rover in moab or anywhere in the back country. Not ever. And I've seen a lot of obscure stuff out there; multiple pinzgauers, unimogs, FJ55's, FJ45 troopies, tons of H1's etc. Edit: I take that back (a little) - I have seen a few Discoveries on dirt roads in Tanzania - maybe 1% of the tour companies still have some. 99% are Land Cruisers, HINO, or MAN trucks. I've never seen a privately owned Land Rover off road. My point being - the owners don't actually ever go off road, so the off road capability really doesn't matter. LR knows this, so they're building a car with big tires that kinda looks like it would be capable off road.
Oh - I do like the styling though. It looks great!

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I'm very pleased with the specs and options, but extremely disappointed with the price tag. I was hoping JLR was going to tackle the Wrangler market with a more dedicated off-roader and realize that 90% of the people who would buy one don't give a @#$% how it handles on the neurburg ring.
I will definitely test drive one when they arrive at dealerships. If I like it, then I'll look into selling my children to afford it.

I like the look of things, and i like what they say it's capable of...
but ive already been burned by LR's...the Disco to be exact.
and with this one, one thing sort of stood out to me on one of the vids they have put out in the past two weeks..."XXX amount of ECUs"
A mechanic that i respect and listen to once told me, the more ECUs these new cars have, the more opportunities they have to break quickly. If they expect all of these things to stay working in the first year of manufacturing, while people run these things in, through, and over all kinds of obstacles, water, sand, dirt, street, snow, ect...and expect them NOT to break...well, ive got a bridge to sell you...

I zoomed in on the wheels and tires. Tires look to be around 40-series, and that wheel/tire combo definitely would be a liability off-road. All the static pics in the video show this setup, while the videos shot while driving off-road show a different setop with a taller (though not tall) tire. The disclaimer says that some of the equipment shown is only available in Europe. Hmm...
I believe Jetboy - these girls aren't sold for actual off-roading. They're status cars. And I'm with Thai on getting the Jeep instead - WHEN it breaks, you're more likely to find someone who can wrench on the Jeep, and more cheaply.
Some RRs look nice, but in my view it pretty much ends there.

Actually, it's got a base price of $49k and roughly $105k at the fully loaded variant, which is more off-putting to me
I saw one of the "big" overland IG groups (and by big, I mean legit journalist/should have respectable opinions) suggest the Defender as a LC200 alternative. Here is exactly what they wrote:

The only dirt she sees is the dust from a construction site blowing into my wife’s parking garage. But hey, it’ll drive through 3ft of water and has 11 inches of ground clearance... in case shiote gets real at the mall.
She is purrty tho.
Don’t believe the hype. It’s still a LR. Ours has seen the service bay every two months... mostly minor annoying crap. Luckily, we live close to the dealership.

I chatted with my local LR dealer yesterday. I specifically asked about a factory winch, since lots of pics show a winch integrated into the bumper, but I couldn't see the option when doing an online 'build'. He said it will be a dealer installed option, so that's cool. Also said they should be getting a demo vehicle before the end of the year, but sales deliveries won't arrive until mid spring next year. I declined the invite to make an order with a $1000 deposit. But I will def drive one as soon as they are available.
