2021 4Runner OEM LED Headlights/Lights Performance and Retrofit

So earlier this week I was able to snag a set of OEM LED headlights from a '21 Venture off of ebay. I also bought the OEM LED fog lights from a discount parts dealer. The headlights arrived today and I got everything installed. Overall it was a fairly easy install that took me ~3 hours to do by myself. Removing and reinstalling the front bumper was pretty easy as was swapping out the headlight connectors.

I don't have any good pics but I'm loving the light output as well as the crisp, bright white light. The halogen high beam looks really yellow compared to the LED low beams. Worth it as a mod for me and glad it's all OEM Toyota parts.

And it's simple as unplugging, unbolting, and reverse for install?

Almost. The low beam connectors on your original headlights have to be swapped over to the new LED headlights. There is a youtube video showing how to do it. It's pretty easy to do. Once you have the connectors swapped then it is plug-n-play. Just make sure you test the lights before bolting everything back up to make sure you connector pins in the correct order. If they are swapped then the LED's won't light up.

I believe those headlight part numbers are correct.

I am currently deployed in the Middle East so I am not with my T4R… however, this is a VERY big thing I have been trying to figure out since I got it. All we need is to figure out that high beam trigger and then attach the 9005 bulb to a relay and… BAM!! Significantly better high beams!! ����

(Plus you’ll also have the capability of running additional “driving lights” that are controlled by your auto high beams in the T4R… as you mentioned in your post).

You’ll have to swap your plug from your lights to the new ones by unpinning the connectors. Takes about 5 min total. But the rest of it is standard uninstall and reinstall.

I think replacing LED bulbs is a good choice.
Stock bulbs are just too dim.

OEM LED headlights, sure. LED bulbs in halogen housings are bad.

2022 wiring: White wire is ground. Blue wire is +12V when low beams are on. Black wire and blue wire are +12V when high beams are on. So, I used the black wire to as the trigger for my light bar.

With the Diode Dynamics SS3 MAX foglights on. The foglights no longer blow out the low beams which is amazing.

do like the yellow fog lights. I installed the OEM led headlight and fog lights on a 17 SR5P and love the upgrade. Still need to adjust the height to my liking some though but I dont drive much at night now a days.

I’d be worried more about keeping my M4 & my .338 Lapua clean more than my freaking high beam trigger wire!

No need to worry about that. Clean is life for my babies!! lol

With the T4R though, it was just something that really bugged the s*!t out of me with those damn headlights. Toyota just killed their headlights... and i need to be able to see!! lol

I think all 2022 versions of the 4Runner have led lows/highs now.
I’m glad my 21 still used halogen in the high. At least I was able to change to a high output led replacement there and it works great.
If you can ditch the drl and re wire to the halogen high socket, you can upgrade and put a high output led there.

I had 9011 HIR in my 2014 , they were brighter that’s a fact.
I found my DDM Sabre LED’s 55 watt 12500/ pair lumens to be brighter.

So I guess they are false advertising.

I’m just stating what I see from my own experience.

BTW, I’ve lost nothing in Brooklyn, so not interested in a bridge there anyway.

Not at all, merely pointing out that companies selling drop-in LED bulbs often inflate their specs to sound impressive so that people will pay exorbitant amounts of money for them. The rating of 12000+ lumens per pair of bulbs (if credible) is likely the theoretical yield of the 12 chips if driven at/over 100% efficiency. The Achilles heel of drop-in LED bulbs is trying to mimic a tiny focal point (like a halogen filament) while still retaining the ability to shed heat from the chip junctions. This is why you end up with these things that look like little key blades with computer fans attached to them, and it's why reporting specs using theoretical lumen counts is often extremely misleading.

It is very possible that they are brighter than their traditional halogen counterparts. And in the open reflector design of the high beam application, things like hotspot focus and glare control are not as critical as they are in the low beam projector.

So your experience may be correct. Just don't feel disappointed if you measure the current draw of the lights and they pull nowhere near 55w. That would require a level of heat capacity not possible with that design.

I can't comment on the part #'s as I bought mine used.

The reason people (myself included) are installing the headlights with low beam LEDs only is because they are virtually a direct swap. The low beam still uses a 2-wire connection. The only modification needed is to swap out the low beam connector. It's easy to do and doesn't require any wire cutting or other permanent modifications. The high beam connector stays the same as the halogen high beam bulb is still used for the high beams and DRLs.

The low & high beam LED headlights are wired differently and I don't think anyone has figured out how to make them work. What was just the low beam side is both low beam and high beam and has a 3-wire connection. And what was just the high beam (halogen) side is now just used for DRLs.

So if you want to install OEM LED headlights into your '14-'20 4Runner you need low beam only LED headlights from a '21 4Runner (SR5 premium, TRD OR, Venture). The Pro and Limited (I believe) have low and high beam LEDs so those won't work.
