2024 4runner horn randomly honking 5 times.

Hello,

I just got a new 2024 4runner ORP. This is my 4th 4runner and the first to have this weird issue.

It will be locked and sitting in my driveway and then randomly the horn with go off with 7 short beeps and then nothing. When I disarm it, the horn with go off with 2 short beeps indicating that the alarm didn't go off. Any idea why it does this?

Also, I should mention that there are times where the alarm also randomly goes off. I've read that this might be due to a bad hood latch contact?

the horn? or the security beep sound that happens when you lock/unlock the vehicle? have you tested the car battery?

Mine did that recently when the key battery was dying. Odd for a 24 to have a low key battery though.

I remember back in my tacoma days, everyone was going with the fog light mod, where you tap a wire from the fog light switch into the fuse box, and it allowed you to run the fog lights any time the switch was on rather than with low beams only.
Then people started realizing when they would walk out at lunch time, or some odd time, their fog lights were on.
Toyota ECU runs something like a "check" where it activates certain relays, fuses, and checks the circuitry and makes sure everything is working properly. You can walk out at midnight to walk the dog and hear the fuel pump running like 2 minutes straight, its just the ECU running its checks. It seems it does them about every 4 hours after you cut the vehicle off or so it was that way in the Tacomas.
I am wondering, did you happen to change any wiring, hook anything up, or add to anything like an aftermarket alarm setup?

It is the horn, not the beeps.

I haven't test the battery. The car is a month old so I didn't think it would be a low battery.

If you download the Toyota app to your phone, there is a part that will give you the status of the battery health of the keyfob. That is at least the one thing it is useful for. Otherwise, it's a stupid app. The old version was much better IMHO. Don't know why they nuked all of the useful things (mileage, Tire pressure, maintenance log etc).

I had a previous car alarm that had a proximity sensor so if someone got close or leaned on the car it would do the multiple beeps things as a warning before it would go off. I didn't know if the new 4runner had that type of sensor in its factory alarm.

It is not the fuel pump running, but rather the Evap system test; the car runs an air pump to see if there are any leaks in the Evap system.

It wasn't subscription based before and it never asked for me to sign up for any subscription. The app was 'upgraded' to a new version a few months ago (?) and ever since, it's been useless.

Ok so guess what. I figured out that if the alarm is on (and I kick the car or push it so it rocks, the horn will go 7 short horns. So this means that the car alarm does have some time of motion sensor.

If I kick the car again right away after the 7 horns, the alarm goes off.

Of course this doesn't explain why it just sometimes goes off without the car experiencing any movement.

Perhaps it has the optional Vehicle Intrusion Protection (VIP): Vehicle Intrusion Protection (Vip) Security System | Part #PT39848141 | Toyota Auto Parts

The VIP senses sound, like someone trying to break the glass. It has a sensitivity adjustment, and if set too high, it can alarm on softer sounds.

To see if you have the VIP, look for a microphone on one of the optional dash switch points.

I just looked up the manual and I can turn down the sensitivity once I find the little black box. If that doesn’t work I’ll make them uninstall it.

Thats super weird, dealer installed an alarm? And it has a shock sensor.... Double weird. Does it have a different remote than stock or does it run the stock remote?

It works with the factory FOB. They will be removing it on Friday.
