223,000 on my Limited, Do I start to worry for road trips?

Hi Guys, New member here. I have a well serviced 2001 Limited 4x4. We have a place in CA and AZ.
We just returned from Sedona this last weekend. I am getting a little concerned about doing a road trip with 223,000 miles on the 4runner.

The limited has been well maintained and runs very well, however, I realized it is getting up there in miles.

I do not push it, we just cruise where we are going. What is the consensus on road trips and miles on the 4runner?

Not a problem, just make sure the lower ball joints have been replaced, and a good idea to put in a new radiator.

My wife's 2001 4runner has a little more mileage than that and recently drove over 1000 mile round trip to visit her parents.

It all depends on maintenance.

I'm thinking of doing Chicago to Phoenix over Christmas in my 99 Ltd. it only has 139K but the stuff I've had to fix/replace keeps me busy.

I have close to 400k miles on my truck and I drive it 1000 mile trips few times a year have had no issues. if you have original lbj's I would definately replace them with oem replacement.

my 1998 4runner has 255,xxx miles. And ive taken it on several 2000 mile road trips with several other 1000 mile road trips the past couple of years. only issue i had was a radiator going out on me on a ski trip. It was one of those items that were to do but didn't have time to squeeze it in before the trip and paid for it and extra for labor while i borrowed a friends truck to finish the trip.

I've got 246k on mine, just got back from a trip to Moab (from MN)

Drove out, ran trails, drove back! Just needs new control arm bushings now... So. Much. Flex!

Hells Revenge
Poison Spider
Steel Bender
Beginning of the Rim Trail (Had to do Z-Turn!)
Kane Creek (lots of narrow sections with ledges)

Loved every second of it!

I drove my 01 runner (at the time) with 245k starting central texas to san diego to San Fran via HWY1 then Yosemite, Tahoe, Salt Lake, Steamboat, Denver and back to Austin (about 4700 miles) with zero issues. Listed places to give you an idea of the elevation changes it undertook. Naturally, the toughest climb is I70 west of Denver, the others are climbs but not near as tough, just learn to use your OD off button well!

Like others have said, replace your LBJ's if they haven't been done (OEM parts only). I would also put a new radiator in if that hasn't been changed in the last 6 or 7 years.

Make sure your fluids are fresh/full and enjoy your road trip....

Fluids, filters, new O2 sensors if original, take care of the tranny, and replace the rear axle breather, so it doesn't get stuck and cause the axle seals to go. Also the other two items mentioned to be replaced.

Otherwise, keep on driving.

I had a fuel pump fail on my arizona grand canyon trip. Sucked ass. But she did fine on my moab trip last year. But I do worry every trip now.

Last Monday I went from CA to NV, which included a total overall elevation climb of over 10,000 ft. In between I did 5 redline pulls at a dyno, changed my tune (supercharged at 11 PSI) and flogged it over the pass.

I also have 220k miles. Drive confidently my friend.

Swap out your LBJs with OEM parts from Camelback Toyota.
Add a tranny cooler.
Check fluids.

Did all my front end components w OEM. Also did the trans cooler!

Have record of the last timing belt/water pump job?
If not, I'd do that.
With regular maintenance, there's no reason to be worried about taking it on road trips. No need to be easy on it either [emoji12][emoji1598] I drive mine hard everyday, and- at 240k miles- it runs like a top. Something like a fuel pump failing would suck for sure.

I had a similar concern ('97 w/ 223K on the clock) but have done all the required stuff.

LBJ, radiator, going to do trans fluid change.

Planning to drive from SF to LV to south Utah and SLC in July.

Plus, will be bring some cash just in case. :driving:

If it's been well maintained as you said, the mileage means little as the 3400 will just keep going and going... I got my 00 with 232K on the clock a couple of years back and have so far taken 2 trips from Omaha to Custer and back (1200 miles x 2) and Omaha to Lexington and back (1500 miles x 2) with no issues at all. I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere!

Have a 2000 SR5 with just over 200 thousand,have taken many road trips from my home in Florida to family in the North East and Nashville,like to get off the highway and take secondary roads [MENTION=105273]2500[/MENTION] mile round trips,have never had on issue with my rig,I believe these are some of the last truly well made rigs on the road that you can still work on.This coming from someone who remembers when a car with over 100k was consider done.Happy trails...
