22r turbo questions

Hi, My son rolled his 87 4runner (did not get hurt thankfully) and I am looking for a replacement. Could some one with experience with the 87 22r turbo tell me the good bad or ugly about the turbo. I have never had any dealings with these, but have had several non turbo 22rs and res. One of the biggest questions would be how hard it would be to swap a non turbo in its place. Also what about the 85 efi set up. Do its parts interchange with later year efi units. I am taking my time looking for a replacement, this 87 turbo seems like a good deal. Around 92 they made some changes to the EFI system.

The biggest problem with the 22RET was that people would not let the engine cool down a bit before shutting off. This shortened the life of the turbo unit.

Thanks for your reply. Being a trucker, I can relate to the issue of idling a turbo motor before shuttin off.
