22RE or 3.0 V6

hey, I am getting a toyota 4runner with a blown 22re in it.
what I am wondering is if it would be worth it to upgrade to a 3.0 V6 instead of putting another 22re in it?
whats the power gain.
has anyone done this before, was it worth it, or should a person just stick with the 22re.
I want to put 32s on it with a 2" suspension lift, will the 22re be enough to handle that with enough power to go 4x4ing? driving on the highway?
thanks for the help.

You'd have to swap the trans, t-case, ECM, and some wiring as well, plus radiator, engine mounts, other misc stuff.

All for a few more HP and lousey MPG and an engine with a bad service record.

You do the math.

I have a 4Runner with a 3.0 and a pickup with a 22RE.
The RE is bombproof, economical and easy to work on. The 3.0 is most likely the least desirable Toyota engine ever made.
While you only gain a few HP with the 3.0, you get a lot more torque than the 22RE. I've driven 4Runners with a 22RE that had three or four people in it, I thought we would have to get out and push it up mountain roads.
All in all, mostly due to the cost and hassle, I would stick with the 22RE, especially if you have a manual transmission.

engine swap

Hello to everyone. I'm new 4funner family. I have a 93 4x4 Toyota pick up that I have restored . I,m thinking about buying a 1990 4 wheel drive, 4Runner with automatic transmission, 244,000 miles, for $2k. Clean title, no body damage, interior clean. The 3L has a rod knock :tsk:. My goal is to restore for everyday use. I'm asking for input, should I swap out the 3L for the 22RE? Will the 4 cylinder mount to the transmission? Hope to hear from you guys. Thanks.

I would get a new 22re (lceperformance has a lot of options), and I would regear to accomodate the oversized tires.

Look up 3.4 swaps. The 3.4 is out of newer tacos/4runners and is a pretty easy swap if the rig is already a 3.0.
