22RE Throttle Position Question

Hello All....

I have not posted here for some time since I sold my 88 v6 4 runner. I did however, recently purchase a NEW (to me <img src="http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/cool/cool0012.gif"> ) 86 4runner with a 22RE. Here is my 88 (above) and my 86 (below). The 86 was wrecked so had to tie the front end to a tree and pull it back out. Its a work in progress. Also I pulled out the motor and rebuilt it. Below is a pic before I put it back in.

So this brings me to my question..... After I put the motor back in and timed it (5 degrees BTDC and "T" connector jumped) and took it for a test drive, the truck feels a bit sluggish or heavy. I have never owned a 4runner with tires that are 31 and a 4 cylinder engine.

I checked to see if there were any errors. I got a code 7 which means TPS error. I pulled the trottle body and tested the TPS. I found that the reading for the VTA to E2 was near the top of the scope of .2 to .8K ohms. As I checked the other readings... thats when I found the the sensor actually went OPEN... during the 150 ohm to 500 ohm range. Mine was reading at .790 ohm with the throttle fully closed. I decided to adjust it to the middle of the scope and set it to 500 ohms.

Took it for a test drive and it drove SOOOO MMUUUCCHHHH BETTER!!! But I was still getting a TPS sensor failure... guess because of the open readings. I have since installed a new TPS sensor and adjusted it to 500 ohms for VTA to E2. It does not seem to run as good as the other sensor adjusted to the same ohms. But the trucks engine runs fine and trans shifts on time. The truck however still feels sluggish.

How do I know what I should actually set the TPS sensor to? The range is too wide in my opinion and if you set the TPS to the LOW (.2K ohms )end or HIGH (.8K ohms) end of the range, then the shifting of the transmission timing is off? I have searched and cannot find what the factory initial setting is.

Or am I just being too critical.... since I have never owned a 4 cylinder 4 runner with 31's on it. Should it be some what sluggish? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think you are being too critical, the TPS adjustment is very finicky and needs to be done just right or you will notice several bad symptoms. If you do not have a copy of the FSM you should download one as it will give you the step by step needed to get it just right. Let me know if you need a link to download one, I should have it saved in my favorites on my home PC.

Nice looking runners you have/had.
 
You seem to know your stuff! But you are driving a turtle. Your 31's mounted on rims probably weigh more than you motor does! Mine is pretty peppy, when I remember my pistons are roughly the size of soda pop cans and theres only 4 of em! I think 1st gens were made to operate in Lo-range.

TurboSR5.... I do have a Full Service manual for an 85 and 88 4runner. Mine is an 86. I have seen the section on checking and adjusting the TPS sensor but I have not notice where it states what to set it to exactly. Mine just shows a range.... such as:

VTA-E2 = .2 - .8K ohms.

As I stated earlier.... being anywhere near the two ends of this range causes the transmission to shift either too early or too late. If you have a link that explains the step by step adjustment of the sensor I would be most grateful!!!!

Thanks for replying to my post. I look forward to really tweaking this Bad Boy...even with the little bitty 2.4. LOL....

If you don't mind me asking...what size rims and tires are you running on your 4runner? I take it that when you say, "Mine is pretty peppy", that you are also running a 4 cyl 2.4 engine.

Yeah I know that it is a small motor... it just that since I have been tweaking the TPS position... I notice that on some settings, the engine performs much better. But seems there is a fine line between engine power and transmission performance when moving the position of the TPS sensor.

I was really wondering... if I were to take it to a dealer and they where to tell me they had to adjust the TPS sensor, I wonder where they would actuall set it to. What OHMS? Hopefully the manual that TurboSR5 is referring to has much better "setting" instructions than mine.

#1 has a 22re and auto transmission with 35 inch tires on 15X10 Steel rims...
#2 has a 22re and 5 speed on 31's on factory SR5 rims,,,,

So number 2 feels pretty peppy.


That being said, I also roll a 94 Mits Mighty Max 2X4 low rider with a tiny 4 banger ( 1.9 or something) and 14" tires. My 5 speed 4runner will run circles around it.


Your dealership will screw everything up, I can tell by your post you know more than those guys. They will tell you they need to swap #2 and #3 injectors and have your drive shaft balanced...

That resistance value for ITA-E2 is just a check after the adjustment, it is much more involved. Here is a link to 4crawlers adjustment.

Well... I can testify that if the throttle position sensor is not set properly or the values have changed with time... It WILL cause performance issues. Some issues are:

Erratic shifting such as hunting for gears
Transmission shifts too early or too late
Poor gas mileage
Lack of power or very sluggish
Base timing difficult to set.

Just to name a few.

I made another adjustment to mine today and the results are much better. I will try and post some pics with the procedure I used thanks to the link TurboSR5 sent me.

Okay folks.... So I ventured to start this thread with the hopes of understanding the most correct way to adjust the TPS sensor. Well... I have performed the adjustments base on an article that I was provided a link to. I am very pleased with the results and the 4Runner appears to be responding nicely! I don't know if this is the absolute correct way. Just wanted to let you know what I did and that I am pleased with my 4Runners performance now. So I decided to, somewhat document what I did.

Also...if I am incorrect on any item... please feel free to correct me!!! Thanks.

Process: This is for an 85 to 88 22RE 4Runner motor.

I removed the Air intake hose from the filter housing and throttle body.

Next I removed the 3 vacuum lines from the top of the throttle body.

Next I disconnected the upper hose on the throttle body.

Disconnected the large lower hose on the throttle body.

Disconnected the electrical connector to the TPS sensor.

Disconnected the lower water bypass hose. Also put in a screw to keep the fluid from pouring out. Reference pic below.

Removed the throttle linkage. This just pops out from right to left.

Unbolted the throttle body. There are 4 bolts. 2 on top and 2 on the bottom.

Next I separated the throttle body. I used a rubber mallet and tapped softly.

Next I tilted the body upward to look on the underside. Now I can remove the other water bypass tube.

I located the adjustment screw stop. I loosened the nut and backed out the screw to where it was no longer touching the lever. Then I turned the screw back inwards till it made contact with the lever. Once it touched the lever, I gave it another 1/4 turn and locked down the nut.

Next I inserted a .57mm feeler gauge between the stop screw and lever.

I connected my meter leads to the IDL and E2 connectors. I have the black lead on the E2 connector and the red lead on the IDL connector. When reading resistance... does not matter where the leads go. You could swap them and still get the same readings. Just FYI.

Next I set my meter to read ohms. Notice where the meter lever points to? I got 41.8 ohms. The spec for IDL to E2 is <2.3K ohms. If you are not within range or reading open... loosen the two screws that secure the TPS sensor and rotate the sensor slightly, clockwise or counter clockwise until you are below 2.3K ohms.

Next I doubled up to feeler gauges to equal .85mm. I did not have one single feeler gauge that read this. I inserted between the stop screw and the lever.

I then checked my measurements and adjusted the TPS sensor until I read open. After I adjusted to "open" reading.... I rechecked the previous step with the .57mm feeler gauge to ensure that reading was still in spec.

Next, I moved my red lead to the VTA connector to take VTA to E2 readings.
When the throttle body is fully closed (no feeler gauge) the spec is 200 to 800 ohms (.2 to .8Kohms). When the throttle is fully open, the spec is 3.3K to 10K ohms.

Here is my reading with the throttle fully closed. 624 ohms.

Since all readings where now within spec. I ensured that both bolts on the TPS sensor were tight and I reinstalled the TPS into the vehicle in reverse order. I then took the truck on a test drive. When I returned, I wanted to check to see if any codes were present.

I found the "T" diagnostic connector on the drivers side fender. It is the smaller of the 2 round yellow connectors.

I then inserted a bent paper clip into the connector.

Next I put my key into the ignition switch and turned the key to the "ON" position. ( do not crank the engine).

This starts the diagnostic mode of the ecu. If there are any codes displayed, the check engine light with flash. You can find the codes by using google. If there are no codes stored, the check engine light will flash on and off about every 4 seconds. This is equal to code 1. This is what I read on my test. If you have a TPS error code, code 7, the CEL will flash 7 times (about a second apart) then there will be about a 4 second pause, followed by 7 flashes again. This cycle just repeats until you turn the key off. Once you turn the key off, DO NOT FORGET TO PULL THE JUMPER OFF THE "T" CONNECTOR!!!

Well hope I documented it well enough to let you know what all I did. My 4runner surely has a bit more pep to it now.
