22re vs 3.0 opinions

Or get the 22RE and plop in a 3RZ at your leisure.

I've never understood this swap. The 2.7 only makes about 150hp, same as the 3.0 - if you're going to go to the effort of an engine swap, the 3.4's 190 horsepower makes so much more sense.

To me, anyway.

Not 100% on this, but I think its so they dont have to swap trannys.

Trust me, I am in the middle of this. It's more than just the transmission. I had to track down a ton of 3.0 parts to make it happen.

Oil pan
Radiator
fan blade and shroud
Clutch lines
Gauge cluster
Transmission/Crossmember/drivelines
Oil pressure sender
Motor mounts
Frame mounts (have to grind off the 22re mounts off of the frame and weld in the 3.0 mounts)
lower brackets that attach transmission to motor
dust shield at bottom of bellhousing.

All of these parts are already on your rig if you have the 3.0. Tracking all of this down has been a pain. But like you said, why swap in a 3RZ and have the HP of the 3VZE?? Now both of my 4Runners will have the same motor in them.

For me, it really comes down to the condition, service , and maintenance history on the vehicle. Since these trucks have some age and miles on them, repair costs can really go through the roof quite fast if you need to start rebuilding systems. This goes for the both of them. Either one has it's pros and cons. You might consider driving both to see which you like best. Find one that has been taken care of, and it will provide years of reliable service.
