25.87 mpg???

I just got back from a trip to my families cabin at Pinecrest Lake and filled up right when I got home. My calculated MPG for the return trip was 25.87 MPG.:wow: I even held the pump an extra time just to be sure. I've heard of high 23's and 24's, but this is crazy. I also was suspicious, so I went to another gas station a mile after filling up and pumped .5 gallons. So even with this extra .5, I would have gotten 24.7 MPG.

This just confuses me because the trip up I got 17.73 MPG for freeway and some city driving. Also my best gas mileage so far has been 19.7 MPG of mixed city and highway, but typically I get around 17.5-18.5 MPG. Could this be due to me driving down hill essentially and ~1/4 of the trip was 55-60 MPH. I also typically drive 70-73 MPH on the freeway.

Not unheard of. When I bought mine, I picked it up in San Jose and drove it back to Seattle. I was getting just over 25 mpg's the whole way back. Boy, does that sound nice considering I averaged 14.5 mpg on my last trip.

Actually I heard most vehicles do the best mileage at about 55 mph. I can't tell you where I heard that, but it was some study that was done years and years ago.

Yup, according to my SG, these runners are peaked somewhere between 45 and 65, so the old adage of 55 is right on the money. And yeah, the downhill will give you that kind of mileage. I had a long, very gradual descent from the mountains of NH to boston and I averaged 24 for that trip. I am sure your descent was much steeper than mine was.

the 55 mph has to do with wind resistance,
how is driving slower (55 mph) more fuel efficient?

It could be the gas too. If you filled up at a station you don't normally fill up at, it could have been better gas than you normally get. No ethanol or just better quality gas...

On all my trips home from Colorado my first tank I get anywhere from 24-28.5 MPG. I normally get 18-21. Coasting downhill at 55-65 MPH is a great way to improve MPG. Granted on my way up the mountian I was getting 15-17 MPG so it really all evens out.

Yeah, coming back from the mountains always makes for good gas mileage. Me and a friend took his massive bronco up to colorado springs from okc and got 11mpg on the way up and ~15.78 on the way down.

Yes, Its a very big bronco.

This, I get 16-17mpg going from Auburn,al to Decatur, AL. and 18mpg going int he opposite directions.

I get a consistent 21 mpg, and on occasion up to 23mpg so I see that as attainable. I drive freeway, 65-70mph. Interesting info- I have a slow leak in one tire and when it gets down to 20psi I get close to 18mpg.

I was camping there all last week. We took my 2nd gen Taco, though. Left the 4R at home. We had a great time except for snapping the shear pin on my old Johnson on that rock in front of the inlet.
