255-75-17 on 17x9 wheel

As the title reads can I run a 255-75-17 in a 17x 9? Tirerack lists 6.5"-8.5" wheel width for that size. Would a 9" really be bad? I ask as I found a set if wheels I like, but the narrowest is 9". Thoughts?

Depends on the tire. A BFG MT in that size I'd say no, because BFG tires run small and only give you about 7.5" of tread width in that size. On the other hand, a tire like the Kenda MT will have 8.25" of tread width in that size and wouldn't look too terrible on a fat 9" wheel. So the AT options in that size will all fall somewhere in between. Just depends on the tire.

The rule of thumb is that you want the TREAD width, not section width, the tread width to be equal to or slightly greater than the listed wheel width for the best wear, looks, and performance.

Just talked with discount tire and they saw no issue with the 255 on the 9" wheel. Man this is frustrating..

I like the size. Been running them for a year. But trying to figure out new wheels. One place says no-go on the size on a 9" wheel. The next place says no problem.

I think I am going to heir in the cautious side and just find a set of 17x8's.

I had a 255/40 on a 9 inch rim. There was an obvious stretch but it was slight. Not exactly apples to apples but it's definitely doable.

oh, cool. BFG KMs - those are MT tires right? How's the tire hum and mpg?

Humm isn't too bad. It's noticible but not as bad as other MT's I have run. MPG dropped some. But i think it is partly a factor of having a high profile roof rack, being lifted and that the KM's are not known for being low rolling resistance. The combo of these dropped me about 2-3mpg or so.
