4runnerfourplay has me thinking of which route to go.

He recently put on 255/75/17 (32.1) BFG M/T w/ no lift.

...now I'm not sure if I want 255/75/17 or 265/70/17

I'm going to keep it at stock height for now.

I do go to Tahoe for some snow...and planning to do some off-roading after seeing numerous T4R.ORG members in action.

Please give me your feedback in what size & also what other brand you would go for.

IF you were to get BFG M/T in the 255 size, then i would go for that immediately........IF there is no rub.

IF it was for any other tire, then i would go with 265 series.

I heard a lot of good things about the 255 BFG MT...it is NOT your average BFG MT...it was designed specially for Jeep by BFG. Thus, this is the ONLY tire in THAT size that i would pick over a 265 series tire.

:iagree:, hence why I have 5 sitting around waiting to be put on.

Also for me it was partly the great deals you can get on them, I got 5 for $450.

You can get the MT' for very cheap, but it all comes down to what you are looking for. If you like them, then there's no problem. But if you would rather have a quieter ride because you don't offroad much, then the 265/70/17 offers a much wider selection than the 255/75/17.

Now, don't quote me on this (and certainly BlairB can confirm this later on), but the BFG MT 255 series is slightly bit less aggressive than the run-of-the-mill BFG MT that you buy in other sizes. 255 BFG MT is specially made for Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (2007-later) and it was designed more for all-season (per Jeep/Chrysler requirement). Thus, it is probably quieter and more sure-footed (in rain, snow, etc.) than the regular BFG MT.

Personally, if i had 17" rims, i would get these in a heartbeat! Of course, this is all from what i have heard/read...no actual experience. Hopefully, BlairB can confirm or put it in the trash.

But, you're right...if you are not gonna off-road, then this tire is overkill. From my experience, for off-roading, a Mud-Terrain is so much more superior than any A/T. So, i am sure that BlairB will love the BFG MT when he puts it on and take it to the trail! Josh, since you off-road often, i think that you should get them too! (That way, i can live vicariously through you guys!)

The BFG MT KM is a good choice. You will find the tread is different in that size than the traditional tire. It is a traditional MT design, tried and true and will perform adequately in all conditions. Remember that it is a MT at heart and will sound and handle like one... but you can't beat the price. It will run you at least $150/tire for a D or E rated 265/70 suitable for offroading.


I'd also consider whether this tire will rub. It seems to fit but you will need a lift to ensure there is no rubbing when compressing.

The center tread blocks are different. It still has small ribs between the blocks to eliminate any vacuum in the voids to allow tire to clear mud from the tread. Not much compromise as far as aggressiveness goes.

Everything everyone said about the tread being less aggressive than the normal MT is very true, but you can still get the normal 255 MT's for cheap too.

Less aggressive or not, I am sure it'll be great off road and from my research will be slightly more bearable on the road :D

A tire shop quoted me like $230 per tire or something for the regular ones.
 
Less aggressive? That makes them more attractive to me as the standard BFG MT is too aggressive for me to justify getting for a daily driver. Are all 255/75/17 BFG MT tires less aggressive then the standard tread (like the ones ordered off tirerack)? or just the ones that come off a Jeep?
 
I think the 255/75's would be great. They fit; on our rims you could run around 38-40psi (or higher) on the road and get good mpg, wear and handling. They are light when compared to some of the 265/70 options. The final point is when you do a 'shop-by-size' on Tirerack they are all cheap when you look "tire for tire" vs the 265/70 size. Even if you don't want the meaty BFG's the Firestone Destinations and the GYSA's are cheaper too. The weight capacity exceeds our OEM 265/65/17's by a little so that's not an issue. In fact the 255/75/17 was popularized by Ford IIRC, the Expedition/Navigator.

Yeah, I've been searching that size and noticed the cheaper tires on Tirerack; prices are hard to beat that's for sure. I'm currently doing so much at once , but in a month or two it'll be tire shopping time.
