255/75 with rub on stock? Help with options

Hello friends,

Just got 255/75 ATs on the trd wheels and seeing a lot of rub when turning hard right or when backing into a space

What suggestions do you have? Should I remove the mudguards will that definitely solve the problem? I'd like to really keep the mudguards they look great but don't know what other options there are.

I'll be honest I'm new to all this so I've heard about "trimming" but not too familiar with the process or what that means if there's a tutorial. Would that mean removing the mudguards then will the guards be able to go back on?

See photos. Can take some new ones today with the wheel turned all the way. Any suggestions? [emoji1374]

where exactly are the tires rubbing in the front wheel wells? towards the front against the fender liner or bumper? or in the rear against the body mount? maybe against the UCA? if it's in the front it should be an easy fix with the fender liner mod and perhaps a bit of bumper trimming. if it's against the body mount, that's a whole different story. are you planning on getting a suspension lift?

wheels & tires look great. but as i posted in your other thread that size tire is quite a bit taller than the stock 265/65 (4th gen) or 265/70 (5th gen) tire sizes & thats is why you have rubbing issues on a stock suspension. everyone that said they will be fine didnt take into account how tall they are on a stock suspension...

yes you can cut & trim stuff or get a small lift, but going much bigger than a 265/70 height tire can & many times will rub.

will the same tire in a 265/70 not rub? I'm about to go out and see where the issue is exactly. With firestone I have the money back guarantee so I shouldn't have an issue exchanging them if in fact the 265/70 won't rub.

i had 265/70r17 on mine before i installed a lift and went up to 285/70...the 265's fit great even on the super saggy original suspension. i had no rubbing at all anywhere although they def just barely cleared the UCA. every truck is different.

i have 265/70's on my 08 sport & they did not rub with the original xreas shocks at 145k miles & the front was sagging quite a bit from worn out springs. i have since removed xreas & installed KYB front & rear which raised the front back to stock height plus about 1-1.5" & of course still no rubbing at all, any place. i like the 265/70's better because they retain the stock width of 265mm & are barely 1" taller. 255/75 are 10mm thinner & too tall IMO.

most guys run the 265/70 on stock or mild lift runners, no real reason or benefit to use 255/75 IMO. if you have a satisfaction guarantee from firestone i would take advantage of it before cutting or modifying stuff to make 255/75s fit.

So it's not in the free money right now for a suspension lift though maybe in the future.

I'll attach photos so you can see. This is all per the driver side (the descriptions, and hopefully photos help to clarify)

When turning left all the way it hits in the rear against the mud guard

When turning to the right, it hits in the front, I'm not sure what part that is but I'll attach two photos and point to the area in the second photo:

My assessment is yea maybe a less tall tire would rub as much, but is <1cm (if I go for a 265/70) really going to fix the issue of rub with my stock suspension you see...?

And then the fact that it's 1cm wider is that going to create a new rubbing issue from a width perspective?

Or how can I remedy this situation? How involved is the trimming and mods we're talking? Thanks

Assuming that you had 265/65s on first I think the difference in offset of the wheels is a larger factor (+30 vs +4). The lower offset means the wheel is pushed out further from the hub, making is a wider turner radius, in addition to the larger tires. I think your only options are trim the wheel wells or add a lift.

i dont think you understand what the tire numbers mean & thats fine, lots of confusion out there on what tire numbers mean but easy to understand once its explained which i will do at the end.

a 255/75 is 1/2" taller than a 265/70. & a 265/70 is 1 full inch taller than the stock 265/65 tires that came on your 4runner. so the 255/75 is 1.5" taller that the stock tire for a 4th gen. the 265/70 is pushing it on stock suspension that are this old with sagging front springs.... the 255/75 is too tall for almost all stock suspension 4th gens & you get into the rubbing problems you have found on yours. personally, i would see if firestone will swap to the 265/70. if not, others will explain how to cut & modify... but if you ever change back to non rubbing tires, or get a lift (new KYB shocks will provide a small lift up front) you will wish you didnt cut your stuff up.

heres what the numbers on a tire mean: first number is the width of the tire tread 265. next number is the sidewall height, its a percentage of the width number, 70. & last is obviously the rim size, 17. so the bigger the middle number is what determines the height of the tire based on the width. so a 265/70 sidewall is 70% of 265mm. also each brand of tire can vary quite a bit in size for the same number because they all have different tread & sidewall designs that can make the overall dimension different, especially on A/T tires with aggressive side treads.

hope that helps.

You will need to do a Body Mount Chop (BMC) if you plan on keeping that tire size...best $400 I spent for the tall & skinny look and rolling power!

I have bigger tires without a BMC. What am I doing wrong?

i'm right there with you! i have 285/70's....i realize the 255/80's are almost a half inch taller, but the 285's are an inch and a half wider than 255 and i have no need for a BMC - i'm nowhere close to it. all i had to do was the fender liner mod and cut off a tiny section of the bumper where the liner used to attach, and that was it. everyone's truck is different. that's one of the first things i picked up on while researching this site for months trying to decide what lift/tire size to go with. one person will do a mod with no issues, and then another person, with the exact same truck doing the exact same mod will have all kinds of issues.

Hmmm, well than, I'm not sure...to me, I would assume I would need a BMC, though I was mistaken thinking he was inquiring about 255/80 and not 255/75...for me with my current suspension setup, I barely rubbed the Body Mounts but it drove me nuts so got it whacked off...my apologies for not providing anything useful...and Good Luck on the remedy!
