255/80R17.. NOT Just BFG Anymore

Thank you very much for going to the trouble to do this. I owe you a cold one in Ouray next month.

I wish we could star a thread where everyone measured what they own (off the vehicle) so we could all know exactly what the size is, its clear the chart is just close at best.

For instance...
Real measurements.....

Overall diameter:
285 = 32 13/16"
255 = 33 5/16"

Tread width:
285 = 9 1/2"
255 = 9 1/16"

Overall width (at widest point in sidewall):
285 = 11 9/16"
255 = 10 3/4"

FROM THE CHART

Overall diameter:
285 = 32.83
255 = 32.8

Tread width:
285 = 9.08
255 = 8.9

Overall width (at widest point in sidewall):
285 = 11.4
255 = 10.2


The chart is very close on all of these with a few exception, but the exceptions are important.

Nice, you got a little better deal than I did, I was $1087 out the door for 5. But I still feel I did okay. I have to say, Discount tire (at least the one by my house) is staffed with pretty good help, and I enjoyed all three of my visits.

I am a die-hard BFG guy but I gotta admit these tires look frkn awesome! I've got fairly new KM2s(33/10.5R15)on my '88 4rnr but my '85 Hi-Lux with 16" Tacoma rims is about due for some new shoes. I'm thinking an LT 6-ply..? :thumb3:

I have always loved the BFG and they even sponsored us (PSC Motorsports) for a few years. I still like the way they look, I just hate that they still use natural rubber mostly. Everyone loves how long they last, but it's because they are so darned hard. If they would give the general public access to the compound they use in the Red Label (avail to sponsored vehicles only) they would have an awesome tire again, but they have fallen so far behind Cooper, Hankook, Mickey Thompson, and General on tire compounds it's not even funny. The worse part about it all... you get 15% more tread life from BFG but pay 30% more..

People (myself included) love BFGs because their dad did and his dad did and they have been around forever......But times change and BFG has not.

Is this with or without wheel spacers? This is what I want to do with mine.

The best part about the 255s is you don't have to run a wheel spacer, even with OEM wheels.

1. Do you have any pictures with no flexing? Just a straight side shot.
2. Did the 255x80x17 for in your spare under the back?
