Toyo AT3 in 255

It is time to play pick that tire!
I have spent a good bit of time going back to forums that are years old, to try and help me with my next tire purchase. I was hoping to get some updated feedback here. Covid pretty much screwed my chances on upgrading my lift and wheels. My 265 Load E Duratracs are all but toast, and I need tires now!
My current set up is 5200's set at 2.5 and SAW Rear coils 1.5
I have read that going to a 285 tire would require new rims so my new tires will need to fit on my TE OEM wheels.
I was thinking...
A new set of 265 70 17's Duratracs but at Load C.
Toyo AT3 255 80 17 Load E
Copper ST Maxx 255 80 17 Load E
BFG KO2's LT255 75 17 Load C
The Toyo AT3's are probably my first pick. Help me internet!
With my current set up, should I just risk it all and get some Toyo AT3's in 285?

Suggest you stay with the stock size. I have used BFG KO2 a number of times and I like them. I currently have them on my 2018 SR5 premium.

You can get Falkens in 255/80 as well, which is probably what I’ll do for my next set. You can rock 285’s on your TE wheels but unless you just have to have them for looks, I don’t understand the desire (especially when a BMC is performed).

Your wheels are 7.5” which is typically the minimum wheel width for a 285 based on the tire manufacturing recommendations. Stock TE wheels with larger tires usually require less trimming than many aftermarket wheels since there is more positive offset on the stock wheels. That’s what I’ve read and it makes sense.

With that said, if you are ok to go E rated, I really like the look of 255/80/17…

I have tried really hard to find a thread that mentions the 255 80 Toyo At3.

I am pretty sure that is the tire I will go with.

My 2010 TE only has 62K on the odometer. I am keeping this 4runner for life.

When I do decided to give toytec my money I am going Boss and 285's.

285/70R17s fit just fine on stock trail rims. Maybe some minor rubbing of the front mud flaps, but no body mount cutting required. YMMV

I can confirm they are fantastic. They laugh at potholes and washboard pavement. I ran them for 2000 miles before my lift and there was no loss in fuel economy vs. the oem tires, after correcting for the difference in revs per mile. 19.5 mpg on 31.7" oem vs 18.7 mpg on the 33.1" is exactly the same fuel economy. Your speedometer will now be accurate, and your odometer will underreport mileage by about 4.5%.

You also shouldn't expect any rubbing on the front mud flaps with stock suspension and Trail rims unless your caster is below the oem spec range (say 2.7 or less). 3.4 would be right in the middle of the oem range and will not rub.

I'm running Load E KO2 and find the ride quality the same as the OEM tires. I'm running the Load E because of the off roading I do in Colorado where there are numerous rocks with sharp edges.

What PSI are you running?

42 front, 40 rear after doing a chalk test. Mine is about 250 lbs heavier than stock because of steel skids and sliders.

Good to know. That actually coincides with doing the math of the max psi/max load = Actual PSI/Actual Load. Solve for actual PSI…

I’ve got the Toyo AT2 in 255/80 on my 4th gen, but no threads about them. I’m very happy with the tires so far!

What made you pick the Toyo's over the Cooper St Maxx? On road performance?

Probably the weight difference. I'm still open to trying a set of the ST Maxx and also the Falken Wildpeak in the future, but for now really pleased with the Toyos. Going to stick with 255/80s though for sure.

Glad to read the positive reviews on the Toyo AT3.... I recently installed the 2.5” diameter Toytec Aluma series shocks/lift on my 2015 TRD Pro and have new 255/80R17 AT3’s ordered and will have installed in the next week or so. Pumped about how it will turn out.

I have 255/85R16’s G003’s on my 07 FJC and love the way the look along with the great off-road performance with the G003 but wanted a calm AT tire for the 4Runner.
