I have had stock tire size, 285's, 265's, and now 255's.
My 285's were Dakota MT's. They were loud, slowed steering, braking, and acceleration a noticeable amount. Their traction was outstanding their wear characteristics were not great.
I then moved to the 265 Cooper ATP's. I gained back a lot in terms of acceleration, steering feel, braking, and NVH. These were great street tires with moderate off-roading, but not fantastic in the mud, and average in the snow.
I now have the pizza cutter ST Maxx's, and I gained some lightness in the steering coming from 265's which was surprising. The braking is slightly more labored than the 265's, but MUCH better than the 285's. I am shocked at how quiet the tire is for how aggressive the tread is. The ride is quite smooth as well. I haven't had the tires off-road or in inclement weather yet, but I am impressed so far and suspect they'll be as great as everyone says. They look better than the 265's, as they fill the wheel well a little more.
I'll update the post once I have the wheels for a bit longer so that I can comment more on their performance. So far I have to say that the 255's seem to be the perfect size for these trucks for a vehicle that sees a lot of highway miles and is expected to perform exceptionally off-road. 35's are awesome, but require some level of fortification I'm not ready to achieve. With a stock motor and gears, I believe 255's are very well suited to the truck.
