$2600.00 for a sawed off cat

The other night, some jackasses decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and saw out my cat on my 1998 4runner. Sweet! Boy am I stoked......Right....Well, I had to make an insurance claim because the totalestimate was $2600.00 here at Steven's Creek Toyota in San Jose.......Well at least I will have a new cat and 02 sensors......I might as well go ahead and get a new muffler on it too now...What do you guys recommend for a nice low purrrr?

That's weird. I think that's the first I've heard about someone's cat getting stolen.

So I was talking about this with my dad and apparently its been on the news. It's a pretty popular thing these days, especially in Cali.

ive heard of it too..You figure, with a sawzall, or some sockets, it would be pretty simple to get them off...you can almost always get to them very easy

FYI: catalytic converters contain platinum which I believe (I could be wrong) cost about $200 per ounce or so. Our local news channel did a story on this recently. Larger vehicles (i.e.- SUVs and trucks) are the main targets as the CATs are larger than the ones in cars (more platinum = more $$$) and also they're easier to access. Really sucks that criminals are going after these nowadays. Someone need to think up of some anti-theft device for CATs...or we all can get custom skid plates that cover them, just a thought :

I thought it was Magnesium in the Catalytic converters that people stole them for...??? I don't know but there was a big mess of that happening around here at one time

I am guessing that they are targeting trucks and SUV since they are able to get under them with out lifting the vehicle. Man they must be brave sawing one of those off isn't a quiet act.

I actually work in insurance and had a similar claim for a Tacoma that had the same thing happen out here in Sac. Apparently it's tweakers who like to jack them and hock 'em for quick cash. Some of 'em are really easy to get to...

Its become very common here in NC. Some tow rigs and trail rigs have had them stolen while sitting at the trailhead down at Uwahrrie Natl. Forest. as well as around the Raliegh area.

How ironic, I'm reading this thread and at the bottom is an ad for a place that buys scrap converters...look at the price for a foreign one! I'm about to take a sawzall with me to the local movie theater parking lot myself! (Just kidding...)
