265/70/17 How bad will they rub on stock 99 limited?

I have a chance to buy some 5th gen T4R wheels that are brand new off a 2011....I tried to search, but found fixed results. I really just want to know that for the price I am paying for the wheels, will it end up just being annoying? I need to get there and pick these up ASAP if possible. 265/70/17 Dunlop AT20 Gradtrek Tires...Thanks!!!

I'm not sure on the backspacing on the wheels, but they shouldn't be a problem considering one of the stock tire sizes on a third get is a 265/70/16.

265/70-R16 is stock 3rd gen tire size (31") on a 16" wheel.

265/70-R17 is a step up to a 32" tire on a 17" wheel. [Same overall size as 265/75-R16 for a 16" wheel]
You can run 32's with stock suspension and no rubbing. But not anything larger without trimming.

To the OP, do a quick research on the 2011 4runner's stock wheel backspacing and compare it to the 3rd Gen's 4.625 or 4 5/8" value.

This was not my experience. My 99 back when I had stock suspension rubbed like hell. I had to trim the mudflap, and hammer in the pinch weld. It still rubbed when turning into a shopping center, etc.

Finally was remedied after my 99 4WD springs. If yours is a 4WD, you may not experience rubbing, but you may have problems if they've sagged a lot over time.

There is no definite answer. Each case is different, but most likely, if you have a 4WD Limited from 1999, you should be fine.

Yea my truck is 4x4 and doesnt seem to sag at all. I wish there was a way to know for sure before I spent the money...


Thanks again everyone for the advice here, sounds like if I want to go buy them I can put them on and see if they rub at all. I know they would look very nice on my truck too!!! I'll keep everyone posted...

I say go for it! Sounds like the worse case scenario is some minor rubbing that can be easily remedied.

i have a stock suspension 97 when i got my tundras with 265/70/17s and got no rub at all.

Hi i know its been a long time since anyone has asked a question on this loop but im wondering if i can put the same 17" rims with a 265/60R17 tires same with but different ration if possible i can go with a lower profile tires without compromising my trim it will be a 29" overall diameter instead of the 31"

Body/suspension clearance is the same whether your truck came with 29" or 31" tires from the factory (meaning, you can go up to the same max size).

You will, on the other hand have much worse gearing (my truck came with 3.727 gears with the small tires!) and you will probably want to fix the speedo error, as it will be larger with those tires compared to all the trucks that had 31" tires stock.

As long as the tire manufacturer says they will fit on a 7.5" wide rim, sure. (or, yes, they will fit just fine)

Im a new member and i also have some questions relating to tire size, rubbing etc... I have an 02 SR5 and would love to get some new tires, i was thinking about getting some 265/75/15's duratracs. First; will these tires rub on a stock suspension. Two; how much wider will these size tires be from a rear view or front view as opposed to my stock 235 tires. I don't have any flares or mud flaps i just want to make sure its not going to look ridiculous, but at the same time i don't want it to be too small. Again, i'm a new member and any feedback would be much appreciated.

Are you sure you have a 15" wheel? I didn't think they were an option after '00.

265/70r17

I have 265/70R17 Cooper ST Maxx Tires with 2016 4Runner wheels mounted on my 1997 4Runner. As far as backspacing, there is about a half an inch between the upper control arm and the tire. These tires measure about an inch taller and a little narrower than the 265/70R16 BFG All Terrains I had on it previously.
